Text: Isaiah 11
A new glimpse of a lively Branch.
The prophesied Person of Jesus.
What are some of the clear descriptions of Emmanuel.
A shooting sprout out of family of Jesse. New Rod - rod of God’s anger (10:5) is replaced with a new rod. This sprout shoots from the stump where David (Judah) has been cut off and a new one is coming. (Jesse is David’s Father. Accentuating that Jesus was to take David’s place) The Messiah will be the Branch out of his root.
Jeremiah 23:5-6 : A righteous branch (Fulfillment of the covenant made to Israel.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
This was written after Isaiah was dead so what God started with Isaiah is filled in by Jeremiah.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness. For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
The Holy Spirit would be upon him. (Demonstrated in his Wisdom - age of twelve; not like the Pharisees but as an authority.)
Luke 4.14-21 Jesus reads in the synagogue this day is this fulfilled
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
The Prophesied Power of the Kingdom of God.
Describes the kingdom of God that was covered in the Sermon on the mount. (Vs 4) This description put Jesus on the Judges seat. Here is where we see that this is about a time different than the life of Jesus. (Some of the great Millenial kingdom passages are recorded.
He will be ready for war (girdle) Lion and the lamb Speaks of the time, vs 9
Notice why this will be taking place vs. 9
“for they shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord”
Global knowledge of God we don’t know how it works but we know what it does. Even the animals are not acting as they are meant to.
Isaiah 65:25 - almost a word for word. Same time and same level of reality.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
And the lion shall eat straw like the bullock:
And dust shall be the serpent’s meat.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.
but notice this little phrase in verse 20
There shall be no more thence an infant of days,
Nor an old man that hath not filled his days:
For the child shall die an hundred years old;
But the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
Kingdom marked by holiness, perfection yet and I don’t like this death will be there...
And there will be those that are accursed...
New Heaven's new earth both have described the same kingdom. 65:20 this child lives and dies. The sinner will die and go to hell. All of the perfection and they still reject the savior.
No sin still rejection
We can’t imagine how all of humanity would come together and there will still be those that refuse the saving knowledge of Christ. If you wish to know the miracle of salvation remember that this is how deeply rooted our sin is.
Consider the preparation for this day…
Clarence Larkin put together a series of drawings that depicted the way that the prophets of the OT would have seen and received the images of the things to come. How is it that a prophet would have knowledge of something that would happen in five years and then all of the sudden have God deliver him a message that wouldn’t be fulfilled for 2000 years. Because they would see the events of the future like one mountain ridge layed overtop another mountain scene. And what would look like one mountain would actually be a lower ridge with a valley below which couldn’t be seen and then another mountian top some distance away then again another mountain rise in the distance.
The Prophesied Pull of the Messiah
In Chapter 10 we find the Assyrian used by the hand of God as the judgement instrument against Israel. But by the end of the chapter they have served their purpose. God has humbled and scattered the flock of Judah and has left a remnant.
At the end of Chapter 10 Assyria will be cut off by Babylonian (lop off the bough)
Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
Shall lop the bough with terror:
And the high ones of stature shall be hewn down,
And the haughty shall be humbled.
And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron,
And Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
This was obviously fulfilled just a few years later when right in front of Jerusalem Babylon and Assyria would fight to the death of Assyria. God would lop off the bough. But this is also a picture of the Anti- Christ when Christ will lop off the bough to establish his own kingdom.
Chapter 12 carries the picture.
The Prophet had a duel message. The potent description of the future also had a here and now message. A clear and timely message.
Jesus told would Identify himself.
I am the Branch my father is the husbandman.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Sometimes we approach this like a metaphor, but it was a indicator that Jesus is in fact the prophesied Messiah.
The Spirit came on him in the Baptism.
But we are also waiting for the return of our Savior to establish his kingdom.
This is what is described in verses 13-16. After Jesus has drawn them together. Through the banner of the messiah.
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse,
Which shall stand for an ensign of the people;
To it shall the Gentiles seek:
And his rest shall be glorious.
And it shall come to pass in that day,
That the Lord shall set his hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of his people,
Which shall be left, from Assyria,
And from Egypt, and from Pathros,
And from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar,
And from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations,
And shall assemble the outcasts of Israel,
And gather together the dispersed of Judah
From the four corners of the earth.
Let us consider then the age we live in today and ask ourselves what we are to learn from the prophecies of Isaiah 11. There is no doubt that this draw will be the people of Israel after the rapture to Jerusalem.
When we consider the tumult of the day of Isaiah. We can see our own day in it.
People chasing one possession after another.
Chasing pleasure
Chasing popularity
Growing levels of Isolation
Each level of wokeness bringing more and more power to the people who claim it.
People running further and further from God’s design of the home, society, and even gender.
This is is a reminder to us that sin is engrained in us. This nature is so real and so permeating that there will be those in the kingdom of God that would rather be judged than live in an environment where Christ’s knowledge runs all of creation.
We have a lawless rebellious people run by the lawless and rebel. If we were honest the people that gather together in the house of God wrestle with varying success this old flesh that wishes it self to be lawless.
Yet we see banner of Christ’s rightful reign waving in the land. You and I may be at our wits end about this culture and this country but Jesus is still the signal shining out to men that those same sinners can run to the Salvation of the Lord. Jesus is even now the shelter from the eternal payment of sin. He can prevent the worst sinner from total destruction of which I am thankful.
He looks to purge the rebellious heart to find its joy in obediently following after him.
And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
He offered himself as the branch to any who wished to grow up in him. He makes his righteousness and Sanctification available to all that would turn to him.
Christ’s righteousness matters. And all who are apart from him will find the same condemnation as that one who lives in the glory of Chrsit’s rest and chooses rebellion. So you and I live in his generous grace and pull from him in heart and spirit. Even in our ignorance we find ourselves dull to the immense kindness of Christ.
Let me remind you that
Jesus will judge with truth and calls his to be people righteousness truthfulness
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord:
And he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes,
Neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor,
And reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:
And he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,
And with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Jesus called us to be judge right and truthful be like Jesus
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
His Rest is Glory
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse,
Which shall stand for an ensign of the people;
To it shall the Gentiles seek:
And his rest shall be glorious.
