Luke 19

Luke 19:9–10 NKJV
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Luke 19:28 NKJV
28 When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Luke 19:37–42 NKJV
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” 41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

A Prelude to Joy

It is easy to celebrate an achievement

A graduation
A promotion
A victory
The Bible Says that the angels have joy in their presence over one sinner who repents
Luke 15:10 NTMS:ITEETRGT
10 I tell you that in the same way there is rejoicing among the angels of God over one repentant sinner.”

The Story of Zacchaeus reminds us of God’s true quest

He was
++An unlikely convert
++An unpopular Businessman
++Very Wealthy

Jesus invites himself to his house.

Luke 19:5 NKJV
5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”

Zacchaeus makes room for Jesus

Luke 19:6 NKJV
6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.
He recieved Jesus with Joy
++He was a man with a reputation
++He was a sinner
++He was lost
Luke 19:8 NKJV
8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”
Something changed in Zacchaeus that day
more than kindness or a newfound generosity
Luke 19:9 NKJV
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;

Salvation has come to this house.

Oh the Joy that was in heaven

God’s master plan was to save what was lost

Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
The story quickly changes as he turns toward Jerusalem.
Luke 19:28 NKJV
28 When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

Going to Jerusalem should have been a joyous occasion.

They Were
++A Covenant People
++Chosen by God
++A People of Promise

His triumphant entry

Luke 19:37–38 NKJV
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
They began to rejoice
They were unashamed
They had seen what Jesus did

What has Jesus done for you?

We have reason to rejoice!

Philippians 4:4 NKJV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!

Others in the crowd

There will always be crowd noise.

Crowd Noise
++Are interruptions
++Diverts our attention
Luke 19:39–40 NKJV
39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”

Don’t let crowd noise steal your praise!

Expectation & Reality

Have you ever longed to receive something only to be disappointed?

Luke 19:41 NKJV
41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,

What would Jesus see if He drew near to us?

Luke 19:42 NKJV
42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

Jesus weeps over those with no peace.

John 14:27 NKJV
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

His Promise of Peace

He leaves peace wherever he goes.

He gives peace wherever He is

Our Security Rest in His peace

In all the excitement, Jesus
++Saw beyond the celebration
++Knew many would reject him
++Knew that many would remain blinded to who He was.
++He wept over Jerusalem

He weep over us today

Will we be
++Like Zacchaeus
++Like Jerusalem
Psalm 126:5 NKJV
5 Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy.

His tears was a Prelude to Joy

Hebrews 12:2–3 NKJV
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

I Say Yes
