Intro:
I remember many of the lessons my father taught me, but the most memorable was when he busted a wooden paddle across my back side. I had been fighting with my sister about the radio. Two important lessons I learned that day, one don’t fight with my sister, two don’t interrupt Dad when he was busy with something. It was a hard lesson to learn but I accepted it and never had a whoopen like that again. Jesus spill out many hard lessons, but probably the toughest by far is the lesson of the flesh and the blood and it reads this in John 6:66
John 6:66 NASB95
As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
That’s right, many couldn’t accept the teaching, but some could and John sets this all up by talking about Jesus walking on water in John 6:16.

Walking on Water

John 6:16–19 NASB95
Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened.

The Crowd

John 6:22–25 NASB95
The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. There came other small boats from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

B. Not because of signs
John 6:26–27 NASB95
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. “Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”

So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’ ” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Hard Teaching

A. Manna and Life
John 6:41–48 NASB95
Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. “It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. “Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. “I am the bread of life.
1. All who come
a. Gotta be hungry
b. Seeking true eternal life, not just physical bread
2. Ate to die
John 6:49–51 NASB95
“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. “This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
a. See the change here in tone
i. Creating distance, from our to Your
ii. Moving from the physical to Spiritual
b. Difference between Jesus and Manna?
Ask people this question

i. Our Fathers/Your Fathers.

Hearing Vs. Understanding

John 6:52–58 NIV
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
A. Jesus Makes it Clear

B. Hard teaching
John 6:59–66 NIV
He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
1. Can you accept it
a. Not going to be something our society accepts
b. He is going to be controversial
Why we don’t like talking about it in public. People don’t want to be offended, but Jesus is offensive.
Some of the stuff people do talk about?
2. Spirit and Flesh
a. They are not compatible
b. They will always be at odds with one another
i. One is sinful one is pure
3. So they left
a. Because they didn’t like it
Ephesians 4:14 NASB95
As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
b. Just like the crowd always does
i. Palm Sunday
Church today in America, we leave because we don’t like it. That is the consumer mentality. The Spirit says stay and work through the trials and you will be stronger for it.
Romans 5:3–5 NIV
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
b. Stay and be strong in the Lord
C. Peter’s response is correct
John 6:67–71 NIV
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
1. Peter has a shining moment
a. He proclaims the truth
b. No where else can we find life than in Christ
2. Some will just refuse to believe
a. No matter how many miracles
b. No matter how great the teaching
Ezekiel 3:7 NIV
But the people of Israel are not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.
