Introduction

— Christ our passover
1 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
2 ordinances
There are 2 ordinances for the church.
Believer’s Baptism
the Lord’s Supper.
These are the 2 things that the Lord commanded us to do.
Believer’s Baptism comes from Matthew 28:19
Matthew 28:19 KJV 1900
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
In this verse we see discipleship and baptism.
The Lord’s Supper comes from the last commandment that Jesus gave to the disciples before he was imprisoned, beaten and crucified.
We see this in a few of the gospels but, I want to focus on Luke 22.
Luke 22:19–20 KJV 1900
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Preparation

Luke 22:1–16 KJV 1900
1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. 7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

The Passover Meal

The Sermon Notebook: New Testament The Last Supper (Mark 14:12–26)

The order of the meal is as follows:

• They drank a cup of red wine mixed with water, Luke 22:17.

• There was a ceremonial washing of hands which symbolized the need for spiritual and moral cleansing.

• They ate the bitter herbs, which symbolized their bondage in Egypt.

• They drank a second cup of wine, at which time the head of the household explained the meaning of Passover.

• They would then sing the first two of the Hallel Psalms, Psalms 113–114.

• Next, the lamb was brought out, and the head of the household distributed pieces of it with the unleavened bread. The unleavened bread symbolized haste. There was no time to allow the dough to rise before the journey would begin.

• They drank a third cup of wine.

• Then, they would conclude the meal by singing the rest of the Hallel Psalms, Psalm 115–118.

This was the meal the disciples were asking about. Orthodox Jews still observe the Passover the same way it has been observed for thousands of years

Exodus 12:1-1

A Sacrifice

A Chosen Sacrifice - A Lamb

Exodus 12:3 KJV 1900
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
A chosen sacrifice

A Plentiful Sacrifice — The Lamb

Exodus 12:4 KJV 1900
4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
A Plentiful Sacrifice

A Personal Sacrifice — Your Lamb

Exodus 12:5 KJV 1900
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Select the lamb on the 10th day and keep it until the 14th day of the month.
Exodus 12:3 KJV 1900
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Exodus 12:6 KJV 1900
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
attachment.
There would be an attachment that would develop between the family and the little lamb. This was intentional, God wanted them to see the high cost of sin. He wanted them to understand that salvation is an intensely personal business.

A Pure Sacrifice — without blemish

Exodus 12:5 KJV 1900
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1 Peter 1:18–19 KJV 1900
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Unleavened Bread — the Matzah

A Judged Sacrifice

Exodus 12:8 KJV 1900
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
The Sermon Notebook: New Testament The Last Supper (Mark 14:12–26)

Fire is a picture of judgment and it reminded Israel that the judgment of God was being poured out on sinful Egypt and the only thing that prevented Israel from being judged along with Egypt was the blood of the lamb who had died to save them. The lamb had been judged in their place.

This also pictures the Lord Jesus, Who was judged in the place of His redeemed ones, 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 3:13; 1 Pet. 3:18.

Galatians 3:13 KJV 1900
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

A Received Sacrifice — they shall eat the flesh

Exodus 12:8–10 KJV 1900
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. 10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

A Saving Sacrifice — When I see the Blood, I will pass over you

Exodus 12:13 KJV 1900
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
Hebrews 10:11–18 KJV 1900
11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Hebrews 9:22 KJV 1900
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
God made a way through his law, to purge sins. But sin would come back in and there was a need to purge sin again.

A Memorialized Sacrifice

Exodus 12:13–14 KJV 1900
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
Exodus 12:24–28 KJV 1900
24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. 26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. 28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
Hallel - Psalm 113-118.
