Matthew 21:1-1

This morning we are going to look at the Triumphant Entry of Jesus as He comes into Jerusalem.
This to me is one of the most important impactful weeks in Jesus Life and ministry.
Matthew 21:1-17

All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your King is coming to you,

Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,

A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

This is the prophecy that is found in Zechariah 9:9
The multitudes cried out shouting this is!

Hosanna to the Son of David!

‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’

Hosanna in the highest!”

The word Hosanna in the Hebrew means “save now” we see this in the Psalms.

Save now, I pray, O LORD;

O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!

We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.

Jesus comes riding into Jerusalem on the back of a colt or a foal a young donkey. This is important because this foal had never been ridden and it was a sign of humility, it was a lowly state gentleness and that He was coming in peace.
Most Kings would come in riding on a horse a sign as the conquering king, but not Jesus, because He comes in peace!
People all around are asking the question who is this man? So the multitudes shouted out, this is Jesus the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee!
It is absolutely astonishing what Jesus accomplishes in this last week of ministry leading up to His crucifixion, death, and resurrection!
There at least 30-35 significant teaching points or ministry events that take place in the last days of Jesus life.
When I think of Jesus coming back into Jerusalem knowing what is about to happen to Him. He just puts it off to the side and goes about His Fathers business, loving and helping people overcome their struggles and ministering to their needs.
Jesus knows this is not about Him, but is about His Fathers creation, which happens to be each and everyone of us. Plus all that have come and gone before us and all that will come after us.
It is about the re-establishment of a broken relationship between God and His creation.
We need to ask ourselves this one question!
Would we come back to do the work of the Lord if we knew that they were going to put us on trial for a crime that we did not do?
It was a bogus trial in the first place!
They set free a convicted criminal and murderer.
They whip him within an inch of His life, mock him, slap him, and then make Him carry His own cross up the hill to where they are going to hang on it.
He get betrayed by one of His closest friends with a kiss!
He get has another one of His closest friends deny Him not once, not twice but three times!
Yet Jesus came back for all this so He could stand in the gap for you, me, and all of creation!
So yes this last week of His life is crucial to our life’s past, present and future!
The cross is up here today to remind us as a memorial of what Jesus did on it for us over 2000 years ago!
So lets look at a few of His things He accomplished in this week!
Power in Faith and the Fig
Matthew 21:21–22 ESV
And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Faith with no doubt you can move mountains!
Jesus on Forgiveness and Prayer
Mark 11:25–26 ESV
And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
If you desire forgiveness then you must forgive others as God has forgiven us!
Jesus Teaching on the Greatest Commandment!
Matthew 22:37–40 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
The greatest commandment will always be loving God and then loving others. The 10 commandments summed up in these two commands.
Sign of the End Times
Luke 21:8–10 ESV
And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
In the end of times we will start to see church and pastors alike teaching a false Gospel and the will lots of turmoil.
It is of the utmost importance to know who are and who’s you are and know what you believe so you don’t fall prey.
No One Knows the Day or Hour
Mark 13:35–37 ESV
Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
We may think we can predict the hour and the coming of our Lord, but so no one knows that info.
Jesus Talks About His Betrayal
Mark 14:10–11 ESV
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Jesus knew about Judas and his issue with greed over commitment!
Jesus Predicts Peters Denial
Luke 22:31–34 ESV
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
Jesus knows what is about to happen, we think that we can stand thru the fire and trial, but we need to be careful that we don’t fall into denial!
Miracle and Kiss of betrayal in the Garden
Luke 22:48–51 ESV
but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.
Even in the midst of the kiss of betrayal Jesus still heals the soldiers ear that had just been cut off.
Jesus the Sham Trial
Mark 15:12–15 ESV
And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Pilate a man with the authority to see Jesus free caved to the will of the people as they cried crucify him and give us Barabbas!
Today what we have to understand is that each of these things had to take place and Jesus had to go to the cross. The only way that you and I would gain our freedom would be through Jesus on the cross.
We need to know that this journey that we are on is not easy, you and I will face challenges, obstacles and trap like snares. It is our faith Jesus Christ our Savior that will keep us from falling prey to the schemes of the devil.
Over this last month we have been talking about remembrance of the things of God in your life.
Today we are going to remember the cross!
If Jesus didn’t die on the cross we wouldn’t have forgiveness of our sins, our past, presence and future sin. Jesus had to suffer, He had to be persecuted, mocked, beaten and tormented to restore our relationship with the Father!
No cross! = No forgiveness, No Restoration!
