MY ROCK MY FORTRESS MY SALVATION

In Matthew 23 Jesus spoke to the crowds and His disciples
A whole chapter on this speech
Jesus exposes the Pharisees and organized religion
Jesus starts off saying they have seated themselves in the place of Moses
SLIDE 2
PHARISEES AND ORGANIZED RELIGION
They tie up heavy burdens
Do deeds to be noticed by men
Love the place of honor
Love to be called teacher, father and leader
**Jesus said these things in the first 12 verses
**He then gives these leaders an absolute thrashing / a mile wide ripping
**24 more verses of what is called the 8 woes (ouai - NOT! ultimately calamity and trouble)
**They didn’t get 1 of these they got 8
SLIDE 3
PHARISEES AND ORGANIZED RELIGION (Woe to you!)
Shut off the kingdom of heaven from people
Long prayers for show - consume widow’s homes
Make converts and turn them twice as much the son of hell
Make promises inside the house of worship for show
Meticulous account of tithes but neglect justice, mercy and faith
Clean the outside but inside full of self indulgence
Whitewashed tombs but unclean and dead on the inside
Adorn monuments of the prophets / actually involved in killing them
**Bling guides / snakes and vipers
**Jerusalem Jerusalem!
**Your house is left to you desolate
** Then chapter 24 starts off Jesus is leaving the temple
**His disciples are pointing out all the temple buildings to him
SLIDE 4
Matthew 24:2 NASB95
2 And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”
**Romans and events of 72 AD
**Which brings us to the point of our titled message today
SLIDE 5 “THE LORD IS MY ROCK MY FORTRESS MY SALVATION”
**What Jesus is saying in all this - organized religious system is empty and no real power to stand
SLIDE 6
Psalm 18:2 NASB95
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
**The Lord’s timing with this message is perfect for Communion today
**
