Introduction
The outpouring of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost.Acts 2:1-4 “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them the utterance”Jesus made a promise to His disciples – promise of the Holy Spirit, promise of power.Baptism of the Holy Spirit – entrance experience to realm of the spirit.Example: visit to India – everything different – culture, language, streets, traffic. Needed an interpreter – someone familiar with the language and culture of India.Holy Spirit is familiar with the culture and language and ways of the Father, of the Kingdom.First experience – speak (whatever has your tongue has your life – Jam.3:4).
Speaking in Tongues Medical Study Proves Holy Spirit Praying: Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues and found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet, as were the language centers. The regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were active. “The amazing thing was how the images supported people’s interpretation of what was happening,” said Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, leader of the study team, which included Donna Morgan, Nancy Wintering and Mark Waldman. “The way they describe it, and what they believe, is that God is talking through them,” he said.
PROP- “Speaking in tongues” is learning an entirely new spiritual language through which we connect & communicate with God—our spirit to His.
Use tongues to encourage and build yourself up.
The Holy Spirit prays the will of God through you.
• Through tongues, you can communicate to the Father in a language the devil can’t interpret. It is your secret prayer language.
The benefits of praying in the spirit
A. Tongues & Interpretation
• 1 Corinthians 12:10 “to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”
1Cor 12:10 tpt
And to another the power to work miracles.
And to another the gift of prophecy.
And to another the gift to discern what the Spirit is speaking.
And to another the gift of speaking different kinds of tongues.
And to another the gift of interpretation of tongues.
talks about the gift of tongues and interpretation.
B. When you interpret tongues, you are not translating what is being said. You are interpreting the message.
2. Speaking in Tongues: Initiates flows of revelation
1 Cor. 2:11-12 “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”
Received – the Spirit that is from God that might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.Revelation flows into our mind the same way the language of tongues does.Language of the heart/spirit is not reasoning and logic.
- Flows – spontaneous, flow of thoughts and ideas
- Pictures, visions
- Thoughts
- Inner knowings
What is Revelation?
- Ideas and inspiration - Insights to Word of God
- Insights to own life - Gifts of the Spirit
- Warnings. cautions
3.Speaking in Tongues: builds and edifies your spirit
1 Cor. 14:4 “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.”
.edifies himself”.Edify = to build up a house piece by piece. You are responsible to build up your own inner life your spirit man.Unless you strengthen and develop your spirit your spiritual capacity is limited....... Look at what Jude 20 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,”
..but you beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith praying the Holy Ghost”.Praying in Tongues:
- strengthens (Eph 3:16) - Sensitises the spirit
- develops capacity - surfaces fleshy limitations
4. Speaking in Tongues: Fills you with the Holy Ghost
Eph. 5:18-19 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,”
Be not drunk with wine – be filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking to yourselves.”Drunk = Methuo = to be under the influence of alcohol, spirit.Filled with the Holy Ghost = overflow, free, generous, joyful.
What is holding you back from speaking in Tongues?
