Your past can’t keep you from God. - Luke 8:2

Luke 8:1–2 ESV
1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Jesus heals a woman name Mary Magalene - Magdalene was a port city. One commentator said that iw as like saying Mary from Las Vegas or the the strip. (typically viewed as a prosititue)
She had 7 demons. 7 is the number for completeness.
So if you think you are bad. You aren’t as bad as Mary.
But Jesus healed Mary. Mary had nothting to offer him at that point. She could not earn love. But God healed her.

Good works don’t earn us God’s Love. - Luke 10:38-42

Luke 10:38–42 ESV
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus now hanging out at their house. Bethany was two miles from Jerusalem. Jesus made many trips there and seemingly would stop by when he visited. He became friends.
Martha his sister did what Mom’s do. Clean, feed people.
But where is Mary? Sitting at the feet of Jesus. Learning. Soaking his teaching.
When Martha complains (typical siblings complaining that she isn’t working haha). Jesus says Mary chose correctly.
We can get so consumed with doing good, that we forget to sit at hte feet of Jesus.
Neither the bad things you did(like Mary before) Nor the good things you are doing now(like Martha now) will get you close to God.
Are you sitting at the feet of Jesus.
Mary and Martha had a brother named Lazarus.
John 11 says he loved Lazarus. They were friends. But he was sick.
Jesus waited to go. He could have gotten there to save him, but he waited.
Martha goes out and tells him Lazarus has died. to which Jesus tells Martha I am the Resurrection, your brother will live again today.
But Mary was not there. Jesus cared for Mary too.
John 11:28–36 ESV
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
She fell at his feet again. But this time it was not to learn it was to weep.
Jesus could have saved him, but didn’t. She wept at Jesus’ feet.
As a pastor I have been there when a loved one passes away and there are no no words.
Jesus wept. He cared so much for them!

When your broken, run to Jesus. - John 11:28-36

John 12:1–7 ESV
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.
Jesus celebrating - Lazarus has comed back to life. But he also knew He was going to die on passover in 6 days.
Martha is serving again.
Mary comes in with expensive ointment. This was equvilent of 1 year wage!!
He wipes his feet with her hair! Annointing him for death.

Jesus is worth everything you have.- John 12:1-7

John 19:25 ESV
25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
At the foot of the cross. Where do we find Mary? At the foot of the cross. See it easy to celebrate him when he is raising people from the dead. When he is teahcing amazing truth. But what about when he is dead.
Jesus said, if you want to follow me, take up your cross. Meaning you will lay down your life and your life is now Christ. Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Following Jesus will take us to the cross. - John 19:25

Matthew 28:9 ESV
9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.

If we follow Him to the grave, we will follow him to Life! - Matthew 28:9

If they did’t recogizne his face. Mary would have recoginized his feet!
