· There are some inherent challenges when it comes to talking about dating
o Not a biblical concept
o The definition of dating is constantly in a state of fluctuation
II. The “Soulmate” Myth
· The belief that there is exactly one person in the world that God has created specifically me
o Someone who is perfectly compatible with me
o Logically flawed statement
o No Scriptural support [the “dot” approach]
III. Dating to Date Myth
· The belief that it is a good idea to date someone without no intention of marriage
o Dating = entering into a more serious and intentional relationship
o If there is no possibility of anything more, why attach the dating label?
o Just be friends!
· Again, there are no hard and fast rules about this sort of thing
o Our aim in dating: a commitment to the best in another person
o A goal in dating – 1 Timothy 5:2
o Am I fostering and encouraging a relationship with Jesus in another person?
o Quick to get emotionally and physically involved – selfish
o What happens if this does not work out?
o Did I conduct myself in way consistent with their best interests?
IV. All That Matters Is Love Myth
· The belief that it is okay to date someone who is not following Jesus
o 2 Corinthians 6:14
o What does it mean to be “yoked”
o There is no neutral
o Your relationship with Jesus is the most definitive aspect of your character
o Your goals, your hopes, your interests, your relationships get filtered through your relationship with Jesus
