Genesis 22:18 ESV
18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
v.23-25
Why are we no longer under a guardian?
Why is the Mosaic covenant done away with?
Why is it no longer necessary?
Because it has served its purpose, which was a preparatory work until the Offspring, Jesus, came.
verse 26 Says it succinctly...
Because the true sons of Abraham are those who are united to Christ by faith.

Sons of God in Christ

v.26
The general, and overwhelming people of God...
Who fit the category of true sons of Abraham in the OT...
Were those who believed God.
This is evident from the argument Paul is laying out.
This is evident from the example of Abraham who believed God and it was counted to him, by God, as righteousness.
It is evident from the theology of the OT of the remnant of the nation of Israel that actually believe God and worship God from the heart...
They don’t bow down their knee to Baal or any other false god or idol.
This is what Paul is teaching when he says in Romans...
not all Israel is of Israel
There has always been a true spiritual people of God within the physical people of God.
And, those that were, merely physically, the people of God were not actually the people of God...
Because they were not God’s people spiritually.
They did not actually believe God.
However, in the OT we see the vast majority of believers being Jewish...
With a small minority being Gentile converts.
But, now in the NT, the door is swung wide open to the world of Gentile believers.
Since Jesus is the true offspring of Abraham...
The only true Son.
It follows that the heirs pledged to Abraham and the holy nation built from the Offspring of Abraham...
Comes from the lineage of Christ.
How does Christ have a lineage?
It’s not a physical lineage, it is a spiritual lineage...
And, that lineage is built of those who put their faith in Him.
The new covenant is spiritual.
With the entrance into that covenant being spiritual.
Spiritual, heart circumcision.

Clothed in Christ

v.27
Two things:
*What baptism symbolizes?
A cutting off of our identity in Adam.
A denial that Adam is our representative any longer.
Separating ourself from identity with Adam and his seed.
And, an identifying that Christ is now our representative before God.
We are the see of Christ...
And, hence, in the true family of God...
By our union with the true Son of God…Jesus.
Baptism is a picture of our union with Christ.
It shows a burial and a resurrection.
It shows that what Christ did...
We are credited with doing the same through our union with Him, by faith.
*The NT mentality that baptism immediately follows conversion.
It doesn’t seem to be a second thought.
It’s a natural flow. Someone says I’m converted. I love Jesus. I want to identify with Jesus. What keeps me from being baptized so I can make this public identity?!
That’s what we see in the NT.
Baptism equals making an identity in someone.
Our baptism symbolized a public identity with Christ.
We are identifying ourselves with Christ.
He is our Head, Lord, Savior.
Our hope is in Him.
If that was real, and faith is what makes it real...
Then we have put Christ on.
This is such a reality that it is as if we lived the life that Christ lived.
It was ordained to be a Sign or Figure unto the Baptized of some inward Spiritual Grace, viz. of the Person’s Death unto Sin, and Vivification to a new Life buried with him in Baptism, i. e. Christ doth certainly expressly relate immediately (if not wholly) in those Texts of Scripture to that outward Sign it self, as that in which there is a plain Representation of the Mystery and inward Grace, we are said to be buried and risen both in Signification, and also in lively Representation of the inward and spiritual Burial and Resurrection with Christ.
By the way, if baptism merely replaces circumcision...
How easy would it have been for Paul...
And the Jerusalem Council, as well...
To just say, Listen, the reason you don’t need to be circumcised is because baptism has replaced circumcision.
So, stop arguing and get baptized.
I mean, debate over.
No more need for discussion.
But, they didn’t...
And that is because there is a fundamental difference in the two.
Circumcision was for the recognition of the physical lineage of Abraham.
Baptism is for the recognition of the spiritual lineage of Abraham...
Those who are in Christ by faith.
Which is exactly why the NT focuses on faith in Christ.
Faith is what is necessary.
And, faith is what expresses a spiritual reality...
Which is spiritual circumcision...
Which is the actual fulfillment of physical circumcision.
Nicodemus to Jesus...
How can one enter the Kingdom of God?
How can one become a citizen of the Kingdom of God?
How do people become the children of God?
Regeneration, Nicodemus.
Spiritual circumcision is the true entrance into the family of God.
And, when that happens it will manifest itself like the wind manifests itself in the moving of limbs, leaves, and debris.
Repentance and faith will be expressed.
A desire to publicly identify oneself with the King of this Kingdom of God.

One in Christ

v.28 mini–Christs
When God looks at us He sees image bearers.
Image bearers of His Son.
He sees little statues of His Son.
Romans 8:29 (ESV)
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
The promise of redemption within the Triune God...
The Son willingly takes on the mission...
And accomplishes in fulness & perfection...
And, the redeemed are made into the image of the Son...
Trophies of His grace.

Heirs According to the Promise
