Triumphal Entry
04-10-2022
Welcome to Palm Sunday
This morning we actually take a break from Jesus’s teaching
This morning is Palm Sunday
Today is the celebration of when Jesus entered into Jerusalem the last time before his crucifixion
The Triumphal Entry of Jesus
Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem for the Passover Celebration
Remember the Passover Celebration was to celebrate the death angel passing over them
Exodus 12:14–20 NASB95
14 ‘Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. 15 ‘Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 ‘On the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten by every person, that alone may be prepared by you. 17 ‘You shall also observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a permanent ordinance. 18 ‘In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 ‘Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. 20 ‘You shall not eat anything leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’ ”
;23-27
Exodus 12:23–27 NASB95
23 “For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. 24 “And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. 25 “When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite. 26 “And when your children say to you, ‘What does this rite mean to you?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’ ” And the people bowed low and worshiped.
This is the beginning of Passover
This is why they celebrated Passover as a reminder that God saved them and eventually they left Egypt because of the great and awesome power of God
They were passed over because blood was spilled, they were spared because of the blood of the lamb the Passover lamb
This is why Jesus is coming in to Jerusalem
To celebrate their salvation because of the blood of the lamb
But remember He has come to fulfill the law, so He is going to fulfill the Passover lamb to the fullest
In fact Jesus is going to be the passover lamb
Luke 19:28–31 NASB95
28 After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31 “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ”
As they are traveling and just coming into the area
Jesus tells His disciples to go on ahead of them and they will find a colt a baby donkey
This colt has never carried anyone or probably anything
This is actually a fulfillment of prophecy
Zechariah 9:9 NASB95
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Praise the Lord our King is coming
Oh how they missed it
Oh how we have missed it
Not that we missed the coming of Christ but that maybe we have missed the work because like the Hebrews were looking for a worldly King
They were looking for a worldly King riding on a giant horse
But what they got was Jesus riding on a donkey
This was not what they were expecting at the week goes on
They are praising Jesus as He comes into the city because He is the King
Luke 19:32–36 NASB95
32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.
They were obedient to the Lords direction
So they go into town and find this colt tied up
I can only image someone coming out of the house near this colt and they ask these guys what are you doing
They put the coats on it to add cushion but to also show a sign of respect
They spread things on the ground as a sign of respect
Jesus is a king and this is show that sort of respect that kings deserve
Most if not all of you have read ahead and know the tune of the crowd changes at the end of the week
Luke 19:37–38 NASB95
37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, 38 shouting: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
They are loud and cheering
They are excited
Jesus no doubt had gained some notoriety at this point in his ministry both good and bad
Most people were excited to see Him and be blessed by Him
The religious elite had their eye on Jesus because he was causing so much commotion
He was challenging their leadership and even their power
But as Jesus comes into Jerusalem they are exited and as they should be
This is the King of Kings
This would be the savior of the World!
We know that as they are celebrating passover that Jesus would be the ultimate passover lamb
As sin goes out and looks to trap people and kill people
Those who have repented and trusted in Jesus are in an essence passover and protect by Jesus’s blood from the fall out of sin
Luke 19:39–40 NASB95
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”
People are exited and cheering
Again the religious elite are mad and upset because Jesus is challenging their position of power over the people
Jesus has publicly called them out and they do not like it
Instead of responding humbly and seeking the Lord
They respond worldly and telling Jesus to have his followers quite down
Jesus says if they are quite then the rocks will cry out
Why
Because Jesus is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lord
Jesus is number 1 in all creation
This is what they are celebrating and may not even fully understand how important this is
Dare I say it in our own lives that Jesus should be so much number 1 that we cannot stop talking about what He has done in our own lives
Acts 4:19–20 NASB95
19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
Peter and John have just been arrested and beaten because they follow Jesus
And their answer to basically being told to shut their mouths about this Jesus
Is I cannot stop talking about what He has done
Story with Jack
Luke 19:41–44 NASB95
41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 “For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
As Jesus makes final entry into the city
He looks over the city and begins to cry because He knows their hearts
God unlike man looks at a person and see the outside
Jesus was able to look at the people and see their heart
He is crying because He knows what is going to happen
What is going to have to happen to save this people from eternal separation from God
Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem for the Passover Celebration
Jesus is also weeping because he knows that Jerusalem will fall
That the city, and even the country will fall
Church He is crying because He loves this people
He loves you and I so much that is why He entered the city knowing full well what would happen
This is why we celebrate Palm Sunday
Because it is our savior coming in knowing what salvation would cost
As we move into this time of invitation
Maybe you are here today and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
I would invite you to the front and someone would love to speak with you about how Jesus loved you enough to take your place on the the cross and in death so that because of Jesus’s resurrection you might have life
Or maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer this morning
The altar is open
