I'm ACCOMPLISHED

1. Intro A. Jesus has been through a lynch mob and a trial.

1. He’s been found guilty of telling the truth.

2. He’s sentenced to die and nailed to a cross.

3. He’s watched the soldiers gamble for his only possessions, a few articles of clothes.

4. He has one friend there, and asks him to take care of His mother.

5. He gets one last drink for His thirst.

6. Then He said His last words and dies.

7. God the Son, Jesus Christ’s heart beats for one last time and stops.

C. It’s those last words He shouts that we want to concentrate on today.

1. What He says with His dying breath is very significant.

2. The Word.

A. Here’s the definition.1. This is actually only one word in the Greek language.

2. We’re going to learn a new word today—“tetelestai”

3. It means to “accomplish or complete something”

4. It means more than just ending something.

5. It means bringing something to perfection.

6. It means completing the goal.

7. Shepherds and priests used it when they found the perfect, sacrificial lamb.

8. When workers finished a job they were to do, they used this word to tell their masters they were through.

9. When people paid their taxes, the receipts had this written on them, meaning “paid in full.”

B. Let’s illustrate this.

1. It’s like when cooking a cake.

1. Your goal is a completed, delicious cake.

2. You get all the ingredients together.

3. You measure and mix them.

4. You bake it in an oven.

5. You take it out and “tetelestai”—it is finished.

C. It’s like when you do your homework.

1. You goal is to get it all done so you can watch TV

2. You go through each subject, completing all assignments.

3. You finish it up and sit back a minute.

4. “Tetelestai”—it is finished.

D. The Last Words of Jesus.

1. The last word of Jesus.

2. A few seconds away from His death on that cross.

3. Looking back to the Garden of Eden.

4. Looking back to Moses and the Israelites.

5. Looking back to King David.

6. Looking back to the captivity in Babylon.

7. Looking back over the 33 years of His earthly life.

8. Looking down at His accusers.

9. “Tetelestai”—it is finished!

3. What Was Finished?

A. The pursuit of His enemies.

1. The Jewish religious leaders.

2. They had plotted for a long time.

3. They were constantly dogging Him.

4. The devil.

5. He hounded Jesus in the wilderness and Gethsemane.

6. Not anymore!

7. He was about to reassume His seat on the throne as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

8. “Tetelestai”—it is finished!

B. His Suffering.

1. At 9 o’clock that morning, He was nailed to the cross.

2. For six hours He hung by three nails.

3. The crowd mocked Him.

4. The Father had turned away from the sight.

5. But the suffering was now over.

6. Three days later He would rise again, never to suffer again.

7. The scars are still there but the pain is gone.

8. “Tetelestai”—it is finished!

C. The Prophecies.

1. Since Genesis 3:15, man had been waiting on a Savior.

2. Moses spoke of the prophet to come.

3. David wrote about Him.

4. Isaiah recorded the prophecies of the Suffering Servant.

5. The Jews were looking for their Messiah.

6. There were many prophecies to be fulfilled.

7. With His death, Jesus had fulfilled them all.

8. “Tetelestai”—it is finished.

D. His Life.

1. Years had passed since that night in Bethlehem.

2. Water had been turned into wine.

3. Lepers and cripples had been healed.

4. Demons had been cast out.

5. The dead had been raised.

6. He had proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God.

7. He had done every single thing the Father asked Him to do.

8. Nothing was left incomplete.

9. “Tetelestai”—it is finished!

E. Our Redemption and Salvation.

1. Verse 30 ends with “He gave up His spirit.”

2. Nobody took it, He gave it up.

3. That is the story of Jesus’ life.

4. He came to give and He died to give.

5. He died to redeem us.

6. He died to pay the sin debt we owe.

7. He died to save us.

8. “Tetelestai”—it is finished!

F. Our Savior died for us.

1. We no longer have to die in our sin.

2. We no longer have to be hopeless.

3. It is finished.

4. Jesus paid it all.

5. Our sin debt has been paid in full.

4. Do you know Him?

A. Are you still living in your sin?

1. Are you hopeless?

2. Are you trying to build a bridge to God by good works or a good life?3. “Tetelestai”—It is finished!
