Jesus Committed Himself to You
Jesus Committed Himself to You
I want to start where Palm Sunday and ultimately the cross started…At the Tumb of Lazarus.
In John 11 starting in in V38 Jesus finds himself at the tomb of Lazarus. This is where the famous verse and the shortest verse in the bible is housed and I believe if we understand what we are going to go through this morning we will have a better understanding of work Jesus did on the cross.
35 Jesus wept.
Why did Jesus cry? Jesus wept not for his friend, but you have to remember Jesus was there in the garden of Eden. Jesus walked in all the glory and never had the intention that people should die or be hopeless because of Death. in that moment Jesus was surrounded by people who, for better or worse, were depressed by the Spirit of death.
In this moment we see why Jesus took the cross willingly. So that we as Christians would never have to taste the final death. In this moment Jesus was showing the Jewish people in the physical what would happen in the Spiritual after he took the cross.
Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead. From that moment the cross started to unfold and from that moment Jesus started walking out His purpose for being here.
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.
53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
But while those who planned Jesus’ death held themselves in meetings Jesus started preparing himself for war.
54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.
It is my belief that Jesus went to prepare himself to be crowned the King. Up till now Jesus denied public accolades. Jesus denied the crown that was rightfully his He denied the praise that was rightfully his. In that moment
Jesus prepared himself to die so that we may live. But Even Satan was trying to stop the ball that started to roll. You see Satan thought killing Jesus would be the end, but what he didn’t see, I believe, up until the raising of Lazarus was that Satan truly thought he was winning.
You see Jesus knew raising Lazarus would start the ball rolling. Jesus knew and he went to prepare himself.
Then, and this is the first time I really noticed it, but then Satan tried to stop the ball from rolling.
9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,
11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
I believe this is when the rocky music started. Bum- Bum Bum Bummmmm bump. bum bum bum.....bum bum bummmm.
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
Cue Raffiki- THE KING HAS RETURNED.
13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
Here’s the main point:
Jesus would always choose death so that we could choose life.
John 12:14 (ESV)
14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
The people cried out Hosanna- Which litterally translates Save us. Blessed is the King of Israel.
Israel desired a king Israel wanted a king because they wanted out of the opression of the Roman rule. They wanted out of their physical issues, but Christ saw a deeper issue.
See many people, maybe even in this church, come to Jesus because we want Saved from the natural consequences of this world. We want saved out of our problems, but Jesus came to save them from the pain and torment of death. What they forgot was pain of standing by Lazarus’ tomb hopeless.
That’s why Christ came to be king. He didn’t come to save us from the troubles of this world He came to remove the sting of Death.
He didn’t come to be king of this world. He came to be King of our Hearts.
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Palm Sunday isn’t about overcoming of your life’s issues. It’s about overcoming death. It’s about ever lasting life.
Jesus didn’t come to be the King they wanted He came to become the King they needed.
And if we are truly going to celebrate Palm Sunday and Celebrate Easter we need to stop expecting Christ to work in the ways we desire and start to work in the way he desires for our lives. Because of Palm Su day we can live promises like:
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
When we surrender our will to Christ Just as He surrendered His life for us we will have heaven’s resources at our finger tips. We will have the victory and promises that are ours, but it starts with surrender.
It starts with laying down our life as Jesus laid his down. It starts by being raised from the dead. So that we can walk among the living.
AMEN
