1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Children obey - In the Lord
Fathers bring them up - Nurture and admonition of the Lord
Children have a responsibility
Fathers have a responsibility
The Lord - It’s Jesus
Children must be in the Lord
There is a special role of the father in the nurturing process
The Lord = extremely exalted
He’s higher - He’s stronger
God can give single parents grace
Father’s you are to raise them in the admonition of the exalted one
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Children have a responsibility
Fathers must nurture
To “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” means to train and educate our children to know the Lord. Who is Jesus?
We can’t just assume our children know the Lord
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Children in the Lord
Communicate to your children Jesus’ Lordship
A greater realization of what it means that Jesus is the Lord of their life.
Lord = “Jesus is the legitimate King of the entire universe”
“Jesus is the sovereign, lawful Ruler of all that is in existence”
Do our children see Him as God
Jesus runs the universe
Life is difficult and our children need to know Jesus is above everything
“Jesus is the Supreme authority over all affairs in this world.”
“Jesus is the commander-in-chief of all the angelic armies of heaven and all Christians on earth.”
Do our children know this?
“Jesus currently rules and reigns and everything is under Jesus’ feet.”
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Jesus is in power now
“Jesus has victory over sin, death, pain, doubt, fear, Satan, and hell.”
Jesus never fails - He’s greater
“Jesus will establish His kingdom on the earth and He will reign forever to the Glory of God the Father.”
We can get disillusioned
We can get to a place of doubt or even fear
We must understand He is worthy to serve
We must teach them when everything is said and done - Jesus will reign
Jesus will be King
Jesus always wins
Jesus never fails
Jesus is worthy
People get excited about human leadership
Do we get more excited about earthly leaders
God is triumph
When the last battle is finished, evil and unbelief will be gone
Those who are saved will get to serve the King forever and ever because He is Lord
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Bring them up =
Nurture παιδεία = “tutorage, that is, education or training; by implication disciplinary correction: - chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.”
The church does n
The responsibility of the father:
Just as right as it is for my children to obey me
I should obey my heavenly father
Admonition / νουθεσία - calling attention to, that is, (by implication) mild rebuke or warning: - admonition.
To “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” means
To lovingly instruct our children to understand the hope and triumph of our God.
Are our children about Jesus being the King of our life
2. In hope, train them to find their unique place in the victorious plan of the Lord our God.
Rearing them to understand they have a significant
Everything in my life should point to the fact that Jesus is in control in my life.
You and I have no right, as parents, or even if you are not a parent today - we have no right to live going where we want, saying whatever feels good, just living loosely without any direction from our Lord...
We have been bought with a price
They must be taught they have a significant place in God’s victorious plan for this world and for eternity.
They must be directed to understand they were created for a purpose in God’s ultimate plan of redemption and His eternal Kingdom.
3. We instruct them that everything in their lives is working to the ultimate plan of the victory of God.
He is Lord, they must know that Jesus will be magnified and triumphant.
4. They must be taught that the way of sin and the works of the flesh lead to death but the way of righteousness will always triumph in the end.
Jesus already won through the cross and the resurrection.
We cannot continue to be casual in regard to Jesus being Lord of our home as Christians.
“Provoke not your children to wrath”
This doesn’t mean that a father can’t deny his children some of the things they want
This doesn’t meant that parent are held hostage to a child’s will in fear of making him mad
Don’t deny your children without explaining to them the bigger picture of God’s glory
Show your children that there is a greater purpose for their life
Our children will fail - did you fail
The reason we are trying to instruct them or even deny them of something they desire is for their protection that they may be used greatly for the service of the Lord in His Kingdom
Protecting of the mind so they may be used for their greatest potential and the divine purpose for which God created them.
Anger comes when children feel that a parents rules or instructions are petty and have nothing to do with a greater purpose and goal.
The rules of the home has a greater cause, when they understand we are under the Lord
This isn’t about the parent
Discipline is not about what children will become for us
A child becomes angry when we see we are frustrated
If a child rebels against direction from the parent because the parent is teaching him about his great purpose in Christs plan, the Holy Spirit can convict that child and bring them to repentance
Children must understand that when everything settles from the conflict of earth as a result of sin and satan is eternally punished - we will be victorious because of Christ
We will be victorious in Christ - Children must see this
Make everything about God
Church, the bible, fellowship
People see God and church as a comfort blanket rather than a pervasive, permeating, central part of our life.
He is Lord
The High and exalted one
Children know if God is exciting to the parents
He’s dispensable through the week
Fill your home with God
“God is here”
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Plead for victories
Pray with them - this produces loving atmosphere
‘One of the earliest things I remember is
Thoughts putting the words in my mouth, constructing words of prayer
Warm drops of tears on my face were the tears of my mother so pleased that I had a conversation with the Lord
Taking our children into prayer
Not did you pray?
Did you read your Bible?
3. Exhibit the Preeminence of Scripture
Hope in the triumph of God making the Bible the most important book in the earth
More is caught than taught.
We teach what we know but we reproduce what we are.
