[[This is the “Before” message…on Palm Sunday.]]
From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
INTRO—
INTRO—
{{What would we call someone who doesn’t believe in the Cross of Christ…as evidenced by an unwillingness to believe in its necessity or intentionality? (generally…lost)}} = not sure about this intro.
Few events in history galvanize the conversation like the Cross of Jesus. Questions of why…etc...
Before Jesus went to the Cross, he spoke plainly regarding it (three times in fact)…and his disciples missed it, TOTALLY.
He did so because...
John 15.13-15 “No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.”
What did Jesus say about the Cross…and how did his disciples respond? What can we learn from these occurrences?
PREDICTION 1: Matthew 16.21-26
PREDICTION 1: Matthew 16.21-26
Jesus Said:
Matthew 16.21 “From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”
Important to note: “It was necessary”
Hebrews 9.22 “According to the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
Romans 3.23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;”
The Disciples Responded:
Matthew 16.22 “Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to you!””
Matthew 16.23 “Jesus turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”” [also 16.24-25]
PREDICTION 2: Mark 9.30-32
PREDICTION 2: Mark 9.30-32
Jesus Said:
Mark 9.30-31 “Then they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know it. For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later.””
Important to note: “is going to be betrayed”
John 6.70-71 “Jesus replied to them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.” He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray him.”
The Disciples Responded:
Mark 9.32 “But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask him.”
‘Afraid’ — likely in light of Jesus’ response to Peter after the first prediction.
PREDICTION 3: Luke 18.31-34
PREDICTION 3: Luke 18.31-34
Jesus Said:
Luke 18.31-33 “Then he took the Twelve aside and told them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked, insulted, spit on; and after they flog him, they will kill him, and he will rise on the third day.””
Important to note: “Everything written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished”
1 Corinthians 15.3-4 “For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”
The Disciples Responded:
Luke 18.34 “They understood none of these things. The meaning of the saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.”
All in God’s time…all the time…every time.
CONCL—
CONCL—
Our Lord is gracious beyond what we often see (or recognize).
[[Passion Week: Mt. 21.1-28.20; Mk. 11.1-16.20; Lk. 19.28-24.53; Jn. 12.12-21.25]]
Then he took the Twelve aside and told them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked, insulted, spit on; and after they flog him, they will kill him, and he will rise on the third day.” They understood none of these things. The meaning of the saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.
