Mark 5:1–20 (KJV 1900)
I changed my mind
And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
Introduction
Growing up, I would often order what the saint would mean ween they would
get up and testify that, I think God for waking me up this morning clothed and in my right mind. They took the time to appreciate the fact that the not only had their right mind, but God their provided them with clothes to put on their back. However, my brothers is sisters we don't know the value and Importance .
of having your right mind, your peace of mind, Until you know the feeling of not
being able to have peace in your mind, until you know the feeling of having the devil attack your thought process. until you know the feeling indecisive and the feeling of the enemy placing the feelings of inadequacies in our mind. My Brothers 3, sisters, The mind is arguably one of the most valuable part of the human body. That's why the Bible gives a wealth of scriptures to us on how to gourd our thought
and our mind
a Romans 8:6- reminds us that to be .
carnally mind is death but to be Spiritually minded is life and peace. a Philipians2:5 Reminds us that he would Keep us in perfect peace it we our mind on him.
- Matthew 22:37 reminds us that we should Love the hard with all our heart, mind, soul, and mind. .
- James 18 reminds that an double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Roman 7:23-PAUL counting that he four a warring in his .
mind bringing in captivity the law of sin.
My bothers, Its evident that the enemy is after our mind. Every action whether .
its positive or negative begin ins the mind.
. Everyday we face situations, trials, challenges that if we are not careful will allow these challenges to consume us consume our mind. Its impossible to go through life without having any sort of problems.
However my brothers and sisters its not the problems that we face that can ruin us, but rather it is our response to the problems that we face.
How will our mind and spirit react to life’s issues. How will our spirit respond to the trials and tribulations of the todays time.
I Changed my Mind
Here we find in Mark 5th chapter verses 1-20 a man who suffered from an unclean spirit, his mind was wondering, As we begin to read this text we find two totally different people from verse 1 then we find in verse 20.
In verse 1 we find a man who was victim,
In verse 20 we find a man who was victor,
In verse 1 we find a man who was suffering,
In verse 20 we find a man who was saved,
In verse 1 we find a man who was weary,
In verse 20 we find a man who was winning,
One may ask what happen between the beginning of the text and the end. The difference was that he met Jesus. Jesus was able to turn panic into peace.
Can I just tell someone whatever your situation is, it may not be identical to this mans. However, Jesus is able to turn it around for your good.
I know we are living in a day and age where we don’t say it much, But Jesus is still the answer. It’s at that name that every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that he is lord, It is at that name of Jesus that we can be saved.
This man met Jesus and he was able to turn his life around.
Often times when I read this text I look at this man with an unclean spirit in a negative light. However, once I begin to think the more I realized how common an unclean spirit is.
Yes Worry is an unclean spirit—
____Scripture about worrying about tomorrow
Anxiety is an unclean spirit—
____Scripture that states be anxious for nothing but in prayer and supplication let your request be known unto God.
____The spirit of fear is an unclean spirit—
__ Scripture that states God has not given us the spirit of fear but of POWER love and a sound mind.
How many times have we had an unclean spirit and we did not recognize that we needed deliverance.
I can respect that fact that this man was able to recognize that he needed Jesus to cast out this spirit.
1.The Bible states that this man immediately met Jesus out of the tomb when Jesus arrived on the other side of the ship.
He met Jesus in the graveyard. He was dead in a sense that he was not living. The only difference between those who were in the tomb and this man was that this man had breath and those others in the grave didn't. Although he had breath in his body he was not living. Just because your breathing dont mean your living, breath and my body and breath in my spirit is two different things. How many can say that although I was once like this man, I had breath in my body but I needed Jesus to breath the breadth of life in my spirit.
The Bible declares that no man could bind him. He lived in the tombs night and day. He spend reckless nights crying and cutting himself. But when he saw Jesus from afar off he ran and worshipped him and cried with a loud voice What have I to do with thee, Jesus thou son of the most high God. In other words he didn’t think Jesus would have anything to do with home(Anyone ever felt like that.)
Jesus immediately spoke to the spirit and said come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
Jesus asked this man what is his name. The replies that his name is Legion for we are many. Which is signifies that this man was dealing with more than one demon.
The spirits went into the pigs. The spirits had to leave out of him.The had to go somewhere.
The devils had to ask Jesus permission to go in the swin. Jesus Gave them permission to…
I don’t believe this man cared where the spirit is went as long as he was free.
Because this man was so in awe he asked Jesus if he could go with him. However Jesus replies go home and tell thy friends and tell them how great things the lord hath done for thee and has had compassion on thee.
This man begin to publish the great things that Jesus had done.
15th verse in which the text comes from said that he was clothed and in his right mind….
As we begin to exegete this text We notice that..
1.Even though he had an unclean spirit, he still met Jesus.
We have to give this man credit for coming to Jesus even while dealing with his uncleanliness. I think we must understand that he recognize that Jesus was the one who could heal his spirit. I often hear people say I will come to church when I get together, However, If we had it all together we wouldn't need to come to church. We have to make up in our mind that regardless of my unclean-lines, Im going to make myself available for Jesus. Is there anyone in that can say, I came to Jesus as I was weary wounded and sad, However I found in him a resting place. The truth of the matter is that most us in here are dealing with something, It may not be the same thing but its something.
If we notice he madHis dwellings——In the grave yards—
Grave yards is a place that is supposed to meant for visiting not for staying—This man had made a place of living a place that he was only supposed to be visiting—Don’t allow a season when you supposed to be visiting make you live there…
Sometimes God allows us to experience season of grief, He allows us to experience seasons of sorrow, season of pain, seasons of hurt, However my brothers don’t allow the enemy to think that this the place that you will stay. Its only temporary, It was David that says weeping may only endure for a night but JOY cometh in the morning. Look at someone and say “ I know you may be dealing with somethings, but its only temporary. It wont always be like this, the lord will perfect that which concerneth you. Sooner or later God will turn it in your favor. Hang on in there, just a little while longer.
Another thing I noticed about this man is that He couldn't be bound with chains——He did not allow people to bind him or chain him—He did not allow people to box him in—-Everytime they put chains and fetters on him he would break the chains. Which displays that this man showed strength. Is there anyone in here that can say, I know I wasn't always right, I know I didn't always dot my i’s and cross my t’s. However, even in my moments of imperfections, God gave me strength to break the chains that people tried to hold me down with. God gave you strenthg even in your imperfections. IF he would have stayed tied down he wouldn't have never been able to run to Jesus!!! Dont allow people to tie you down in what they know or think about you, Break the chains of people opinions, Break the chains of people expectations, There is power in the name of Jesus, to break every chain.
My brothers and sister although The people could not bind him or chain him but he cut himself—Some harm that we occur we do to ourselves. Can I just be transparent, there are some things that has happened in my life that was necessary people, However, I harmed myself. Truth of the matter is sometimes we are our own worst enemies, If we could just get out of our own mind we would be able accomplish much more. However many times in our life have we cut our own self. Im not talking about physical cut. Im talking about spiritually, mentally. How many times have we given up ourselves, Can I just encourage yourself dont give up on YOU… People may give up on you but dont YOU give up on you. I want to remind you that God is able to do what he said he will do, He is going to fulfill every Promise to you. Dont give up on God, because he wont give up on you.
Although this man’s spirit was unclean, despite his situation he was still a worshipper he worshiped Jesus from afar off. Can you just imagined this man running to Jesus, wounded, hurt from the damage he has caused himself, tired from constantly have to break the chains and fetters, Bruised from the marks of breaking the chains that were meant to bind him. Is there anyone in here that can say the reason Im here today is not because Im perfect. However its because I’ve learned how to worship while wounded. The difference between this mans wounds and scars was that his wounds could be seen. People could see that he had harmed himself, people could see the marks from the chains he had to break in order to get to Jesus. However, there are some people in here Just like this man. However, people can’t see your wounds, People cant see the pain you had to endure. However, through it all you still found your way to worship.
He met Jesus, and Jesus immediately, recognized the spirit within this man and commanded the spirit to come out of the man. The people tried to tame his physical man. However, Jesus spoke to his spirit man. The bible never mentioned anyone speaking to the spirit man. What this man was displaying physically was what he was dealing with spiritually, Can I just remind you that some of the issues that you been dealing with are not physicall but spiritual, Paul made it clear that the weapons are warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God through the pulling down of stronghold, We wrestle not agains flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in high places, However with Jesus on our side we gain spiritual victories by putting on the whole armour of God that we maybe able to stand agains the wiles of the devil., and after done all but STAND, STAND. Truth of the matter is that this man still had a spirit, this man still had a soul, Jesus was more concerning about his soul then his current condition. At the end of the day regardless of all the hurt your dealing with you cant allow to contaminate your soul. Dont allow it stop you from getting to heaven. Jesus not only changed this man mind, and spirit but he saved his soul.He is able step in your situation and not only heal your hurt but save your soul.
Go home to tell they friends—Physically and mentally. He began to publish how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel..He published his deliverance—-Some of us need to publish our deliverance— So that the people who tried to hold him or chain him saw his deliverance.People remember your graveyard moment—However no one wants to see your deliverance. However Jesus told him to go back to the people who saw you where you was before and tell them what the LORD has done.
If you want to tell something, Tell them that Im saved, tell them that Im delivered, tell them that I got my joy back, tell them that I got my peace back, tell them that I got my mind back,
It’s in the 15 verse…When they saw him he was clothed and his right mind..
Is there anyone in here that can say..
I’m glad I’m clothed and j. My right mind this morning..
Conclusion:
Once he met Jesus, Jesus changed not only his spirit but he changed his mind.
Is there anyone in here that can testify, that once I met JESUS I changed my mind. I changed my mind from worry to peace, I changed my mind from Depression to joy, I changed my mind from distress to calmness, I changed my from sin to salvation, I changed my from losing to winning, I changed my from being the victim to being victorious, I changed my from ashes to beauty, I changed my mind from the grave to gratitude, I changed my from small thinking to big thinking, tell someone our God is big, think big, I changed my mind from low to high from weak to strong from down to up, from that to this, from suicide to success, from hell to heaven, from Pitty to power.
Jesus asked the spirit what was his name? He understood that he had to call out the spirit by the name. What your dealing with has a name and today we are going to call it out, Depression come out, Suicide come out of the man, discouragement come out of the man, Bitterness come out of the man, hopelessness come out of the man, anxiety come out of the man, faithlessness come out of the man, mistrust, come out of the man, worry come out of the man, sin come out of the man, envy come our of the man.
Once you get in touch with Jesus, He can change your mind, We were introduced to a troubled man. However, by the end of the text we find a man who’s mind was changed.
