SERIES TITLE: GOD IS FOR US

SUMMARY OF ROMANS 8
God Is For Us

SERMON TODAY

THE BENEFITS OF GOSPEL FREEDOMS

I. FREEDOM FROM THE CONDEMNING POWER OF SIN AND GUILT

Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

A. THE PLAN OF THE GOD TO ERASE OUR SIN (Romans 8:1)

THREE KEY PHRASES IN VERSE 1

(really 4 but ill deal with three now)

1: Therefore

Romans 7:14–15 ESV
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
Romans 7:16–17 ESV
Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Romans 7:18–19 ESV
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
Romans 7:20–21 ESV
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.
Romans 7:22–23 ESV
For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Romans 7:24–25 ESV
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

2: Now

Now represents two realities:

a. The Cross Moment

Cross = resurrection

b. Your sin and guilt moment

3. No Condemnation

a. No momentary or future decision of guilt

No expectation of doom
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

B. THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT TO RELEAS US FROM THE GRIP OF DEATH (Romans 8:2)

Romans 8:2 ESV
For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
We were captive to the contriolling power of sin (rom 7:14ff)
WHAT PAUKL IS TEACHING US HERE IS IN REFERENCE TO THE NEW LIFE THAT TAKES PLACE THE MOMENT A PERSON TRUST IN CHRIST FOR THEIR SALVATION: THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT COMES, LIKE A RUSHIN WIND, AND BEGIN TO BLOW AWAY - OR CHIP AWAY, AT THE SIN’S GRIP ON OUR LIVES - OUR WILL, EMOTIONS, BODIES
THIS IS WHAT JESUS WAS REFERRING TO IN HIS WORDS TO NICODEMUS
John 3:6–7 ESV
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
THE SPIRIT FREES US FROM THE BONDAGE OF THE LAW - HE FREES US FROM THE BONDAGE OF NEEDING TO BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOD SINCE NONE OF US CAN ACHIEVE PERFECTION
THE SPIRIT SETS US FREE BY ENABLING US TO FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM AGAINST THE POWER OF THE FLESH
PAUL SAYS THIS IN GALATIAN 5:16-18
Galatians 5:16–17 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
Galatians 5:18 ESV
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

C. THE POSITION OF JESUS TO ENDURE OUR SHAME (Romans 8:3-4)

Romans 8:3 ESV
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
What depth of feeling, what compassion, what pathos is contained in this expression! Involuntarily our mind travels back to Gen. 22:2
Genesis 22:2 ESV
He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
WE ALSO REMEMBER THE MOST QUOTED VERSE IN ALL THE BIBLE
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
HE SO LOVED THE WORLD
Romans 8:4 ESV
in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

WHAT IS THE RIGHTEOUS REQUIREMENT OF THE LAW?

Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

JESUS WILLINGLY CAME FOR US - BUT NOT IN A STATE OF GLORY BUT IN WEAKENED FLESH DEMONSTRATING HIS HUMILITY IN TWO WAYS:

- He emptied Himself

Philippians 2:7 ESV
but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

- He became poor

2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

D. THE NECESSARY CONDITIONS OF MAN TO EXPERIENCE THIS FREEDOM

Their Position: They Must Be In Christ (Romans 8:1)

Romans 8:1 (ESV)
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2. Their Practice: They Must Live Like Christ (Romans 8:4)

Romans 8:4 ESV
in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
