Greetings…
We have been studying through a series of lessons for 2022 on the theme, “The Life Of Christ.”
Last week, we came to the greats recorded sermon Of Christ, while he was on earth, the “Sermon on the Mount” and we began by looking at the first few “Beatitudes.”
Today, we will finish the “Beatitudes,” part 2 if you will, by looking at the rest of them.
Let’s read Matthew 5:1-12 now…
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Let’s examine our lesson for today.
The Merciful
The Merciful
They Shall Receive Mercy.
They Shall Receive Mercy.
Mercy is “kindness toward the troubled, with a desire to relieve their affliction.”
As you and I know God, who has shown us great mercy, also requires us to be merciful.
6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Poor in spirit to the point of mourning over ours and other’s sins which should tame us spiritually to meekness and make us hunger and thirst for righteousness.

The Pure In Heart

They Shall See God.
They Shall See God.
There was a time in our history when purity was a prized possession.
People wanted to be pure, and they wanted their kids to be pure.
Many of these virtues have long been discard, mocked, and ridiculed now and are simply a footnote in time.
Yet even though “times have changed” here in America, God’s word certainly has not.
God still demands purity with his people.
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

The Peacemakers
The Peacemakers
They Shall Be Called Sons Of God.
They Shall Be Called Sons Of God.
Peace is harmony, also known as unity.
Jesus is not speaking of earthly peace though this is not a bad thing.
Jesus is not speaking of “keeping the peace” here either though this is not a bad thing either.
Jesus is speaking about those that keep the peace between themselves and God.
Being lost in sin, divides us from God.
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Being reconciled to God gives us a peace that surpasses all understanding.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This hunger and thirsting for righteousness should motivate us to be merciful because we have received mercy which should encourage us to keep pure in heart.
And that pure heart should keep us at peace with God, because no one with a pure heart can “love sin.”

The Persecuted & Reviled
Theirs Is The Kingdom Of Heaven.
Theirs Is The Kingdom Of Heaven.
Persecution can come in many different forms.
It can be physical of course.
1 And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
It can be mental or emotional as well.
Paul points out a “physical persecution” against him and then we can see the mental i.e., emotional persecution that came with no one standing with him.
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
As Christians, we should expect to be persecuted either physically or mentally.
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,
27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
However, the beauty of Christianity is always in the lessons we learn, and persecution is no different.
If persecuted there is a reality, for the faithful, that takes place and that is we mature and develop a “Christ-like life” which means we develop a steadfastness in our faith i.e., trust in God, and love for him.
3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

When we are pure in heart, we will acquire peace with God and when we have achieved peace with God, we are guaranteed persecution which will mature us to developing a Christ-like life.

If we live according to Jesus’ sermon here in the Beatitudes we will indeed have a blessed life.
This is why he ends that section with verse 12…

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven…
The Christian life, is the blessed life, which means it is simply the best life.

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
