Let Me Say It Again
This evening we take some time to stop and reflect about the meaning of Easter.
Tonight I want to draw, briefly, our attention to some of the final words of Jesus as found in John 15.
It begins with the 7th and final “I AM” statement of Jesus
I am the true vine.
The imagery of being a vine for the nation of Israel was pregnant with meaning.
It talks about how Israel was the vineyard of God.
How Israel was a place, specifically the land, God chose to be present in.
Yet, here Jesus takes the symbolism to be about him alone.
Stay connected with Jesus.
The word over and over in this text is “remain”.
Some translations have “abide”.
We are told over and over again to love Christ by staying connected and obeying his commands.
Reside in love.
The love Jesus has for his people.
The love we have for one another.
We will bear fruit.
The question is not if, but how much and what quality.
All this for God’s glory.
Our purpose is to glorify the Father.
Throughout the gospel of John we read about the glory of God.
The Father is the gardener.
Notice the intimate expression here.
God is not out and about somewhere else but is tenderly caring for his vine.
A gardener cannot prune and trim and care for the vine from a distant.
No he must be up close and personal with the vine.
Let me say it again--love in word and deed.
Jesus showed us the extent of God’s love for us.
May we do the same.
