The Upper Room

The love of Christ - love is an action, not a feeling, his love was demonstrated in what He did for us
Jesus washed their feet - they had all bypassed the water basin when they came in, refusing to minister to each other.
They ate the Passover Meal
Judas’ Departure
Jesus’ New Command
It is called a new commandment, not because it had never been given before, but because it was to be more honored, to occupy a higher position, and given a higher example

Love Glorifies

What Does it mean to glorify - revealing or displaying
How is Christ glorified when Judas leaves
What is the chief way Christ is glorified in the gospel of John?
The Cross
How is Christ glorified in the cross? First, Jesus is glorified because in his atoning death is the central moment of all history… in his cross, Jesus fulfilled the only hope of man’s salvation. And from his cross flow all the spiritual blessings for which man was originally created and that Christ’s own will enjoy forever.
Jesus overthrew the devil… conquered death and condemnation for all who believe in him.
How does the cross glorify God
Nowhere has it shone more brightly than in the cross, in which there has been an astonishing change of things - the condemnation of all men has been manifested, sin has been blotted out, salvation has been restored to men; and, in short, the whole world has been renewed, and everything restored to good order. John Calvin
Demonstrating his power to save
Demonstrating his love

The New Commandment

Loving one another as Christ love us -
How did Christ love us?
He came to be with us
He healed, cared for us
He taught us
He died for us
How are we to love one another - the standard of the love which the disciples are to have for one another is the love which their lord has lavished upon them
Fellowship
Care - Service
Discipleship
Sacrifice
True Christian love involves a long sequence of little deaths as we set aside our own pride, our own preferences, our own sense of privilege. Jesus laid down his rights for our salvation, and we are to lay down whatever we think we are entitled to for the sake of our fellow Christians and the church.
In this the world will know that we are his disciples
Not through our orthodoxy
Not through our works
But through our love
This is the way all of us glorify God, by faithfully doing what he calls us to do.
