A resurrection is a rising again, a rising from a state of death to a state of life

In the Bible, we have many accounts of persons called back from death to their former state of existence.

We will cite only a few of these accounts.

There is an Order to Your Resurrection

In his mind, Abraham had consigned his son Isaac to death.

It was from this death and not from actual physical death that Isaac was resurrected.

“In a figure,” Abraham received Isaac back from the dead, Heb.

11:19.

we are calling these resurrections resuscitations (revivifications back to the state of existence occupied before death).

2. The resuscitation of the son of the widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs.

17:8–24)

Elijah, through prayer and a miracle from God restored this woman’s son to her shortly after this son had died from a sickness.

3. The resuscitation of the son of the woman of Shunem (2 Kgs.

4:18–37)

Elisha through a miracle from God restored to this woman a son given to her through a miracle from God.

4. The resuscitation of the dead man cast into the sepulchre of Elisha (2 Kings.

13:20, 21)

When this man’s dead body touched the bones of Elisha, the man lived again.

The resuscitation of the daughter of Jairus (Mark 5:22–43; Luke 8:41–56)

Jesus, to the astonishment of her parents, raised this twelve-year-old girl from death.

The resuscitation of the son of the widow of Nain (Lu.

7:11–17)

Jesus raised this young man from his bier, causing (1) the onlookers to give great glory to God and (2) the people of all the surrounding territory to hear the rumor of the onlookers that Jesus was a great prophet sent by God to visit His people.

7. The resuscitation of Lazarus (Jn.

11:43, 44)

The raising of Lazarus was the greatest of the miracles performed by Jesus while He was here on the earth.

This miracle brought His ministry to a crisis for His enemies decided at this time that He must be put to death or else all men would come to believe on Him, Jn. 11:53

When Jesus died, a great earthquake occurred and many tombs around Jerusalem were opened and after Jesus’ resurrection, many of the bodies of recently-deceased Jewish saints arose and went into Jerusalem and appeared to many people.

This resuscitation was an announcement to all men that Christ in His resurrection had broken the power of death
