Most important weekend in the Christian calendar.... christmas is big, but this is what does it have to do with us and what does it accomplish?
Talk about a tale of two Gardens… just read through some story in the new testament and reflect on it...
And we can apply it to Jesus and what it means to you and me
First garden… Garden of eden.... plan where people would worship him but that failed… and people decided to do what they wanted with their lives and not worship him so there had to be another Garden to fix it… and
THe first garden… the garden where he would be tried… and the second garden the garden of the resurrection
Garden of Gethsemane beautiful.. come into Jerusalem during passover..crowd riled up… jewish leaders riled up… lots of talk about how the leadership may not be good, and it may be Jesus… and the Jewish leaders don’t like it...
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.”
Ponder this Jesus is about to face the ultimate suffering… and yet he goes and says sit here I want to go over there and pray… we talk about Jesus sacrifice for us… and rising from the dead… and the bible tells us that he intercedes for us even now… he is standing at the right hand of the father praying for us....and the eye of the father moves on to Jesus… a beautiful image
And this garden is a reversal of the first garden… the first Adam fell to sin and that is what this garden needs to reverse.. so he says sit here while I go over there and pray
Think about that… thats a great verse… religion says you have to work for your salvation… and Jesus says you sit here while I go do the work… and my accomplishment will be applied to you… its a great pivot in life… and this is why we don’t read the bible as if we are david… we are the scared israelites up in the hills waiting hoping Davids accomplishment will be applied to us...
Its all up to Jesus
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
James and John.... reflect on the God Christianity offers the world… not the distant God… up in the heavens that never experience the doubt offered in real life… here is a God that is actually sorrowed… and feels the world troubled… that pain that you feel… the tragedy you feel.. the death of people… the addictions… you at any age… we all experience mistakes and failure… and if you haven’t yet… you will… and if you are exploring and watching this… what you get in Jesus is a God that recognizes brokeness… and he not only identifies with it, but he reverses it… he meets it… and gets you a life on the otherside of it.. and that is what is so GOOD about this weekend....
Thats how we can call this GOOD friday a man that had no faults killed…
Jim Collins… Good to great… he says Good is the enemy of Great… and this is really a great Friday… everything that was needing to be accomplished was coming to fruition and how did it happen… through victory and health and wealth… no through sorrow and troubledness… and often that is how victory comes in our lives.... we will feel the pressure and sorrow but there is victory… and through those very things he accomplished exactly what he was needed to do… He began to be sorrowful and troubled....
and in an atheistic view of the world sorrow and trouble are to be run away from… all of the contemporary worldviews say it has no place… but Jesus says it has a place in our life...
Thats why we can get up in the morning and realize it is shaping us how it did him
38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Do you relate to God as father or just as someone to fear… a good father provides and protects… if a king you dare not wake him in the middle of the night.. but if a child runs in he wont be angry.. and this is how we can relate to God… so Jesus has this beautiful relationship with him… he says my father.....
What Cup? All through the OT it was a cup of God’s wrath he’d pour out on the world… and here is Jesus knowing what is ahead… and he says is there anyway this can pass… and some people dont understand the cup enough… and he needs to pour it out… and people think you dont want to hear of a God that is angry… thats what our north american culture says… but around the world they like yes love but also wrath.... and the beautiful part is he pours it out on Jesus.. in the past religions you had to do things so God wouldnt hate you anymore… sacrifices… and here Christianity says he gave his own son to pour the wrath upon..no more sacrifices to be made for atonement… here the cup is about to be poured out on the son.... and the son knows it and he says is there anywhere else.... isnt this beautiful… this is why you should believe it… you wouldnt leave this in there… at the last moment let me ask you to take it away...
On his face praying.... is there any other way… we experience that every day… is there any other way to get your will done Jesus… and we try to take it into our own hands… and we think there is a way we can do it on our own… but not as I will…but as you will...
in the end he has this moment where he says not about me… but what you want… and that is how we have to respond we have to realize that he has it better for us than what we need...
40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
You want to know the secret to defeating temptation? Wake up and watch… quit sleeping and pray… you have to be realizing… don’t be ignorant to it… its an alternative vision to flourishing… the temptation is to keep doing this sin it feels good its how you when… don’t listen to it… wake up and pray when you start to feel tempted that I will want to do what you want me to do other than what I want to do… watch and pray.. .watch and pray....
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak whether you are a christian or not we want to accomplish great things.. that is the human experience… thats why beauty and consciousness
We dream of a different world or a better world… that is different for people but if we dream of a world this world cannot fulfill then we aren’t designed for this world… we want to serve and please God but the flesh is weak… I am tired I have anxiety and fear and things are right in front of me and I can fall to it… and its a rebuke… but he’s also saying I get it… IM here… I am with you I can walk you through it.
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
Ultimately I want to do the will of God… courage… recognition..
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
And this is a clear difference between the disciples and Jesus… and we are not the Jesus in the story… we are the disciples… and we should realize he is accomplishing something we never could…
44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
This is like a scene in the movie… he is at hand… and boom… and who is the betrayer?
47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
A guy that was with him for three years… travelling experiencing… rising from the dead… demons cast out of people… its scary… think about the psychology… they say we will almost always go with our gut instead of the logic… we will go with the sparkle instead of what makes sense
Some of you say I’d believe Jesus if I saw people rise from the dead too… would you.... Judas didn’t… he took the sparkle over the logic...
One of the great acts of discipleship in modern world is self disobedience… Don’t follow your own heart… it will derail you… through insecurity you will sabotage yourself in relationships with God… people,.. work.... somehow you have to be able to rise above how you feel in the moment and go after something that is bigger than how you feel… Judas saw all this stuff and someone offers him money and he falls to money… and some of us have done that and it derails our very soul until we cant even see him.... I know we are quick to throw Judas under the bus.. nobody naming them Judas… never met one. But we would be betraying the story if we didnt realize every day we have a potential to be him...
48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.”
49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him.
Judas keeps calling him rabbi as opposed to Lord… he never got it… he betrays him with a kiss… give him lip service and betray him in our heart for silver and Gold...
50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
Other gospels tells us this is Peter… and
52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
You aren’t getting it.. we aren’t fighting it out… I know you thought I was going to build this earthly kingdom....this is a spiritual kingdom… wars with swords… create a big culture and then people die and still end up in hell… thats not what this is about...
53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
Legion 6000 very well trained navy seals… 12 times that right now.... We can see one angel wipe out thousands in the old testament… you think that sword is doing anything… I am not here to fight back,.. I am here for something deeper… sometimes we want God to do something special and we get jacked up… like the guy lowered through the roof he wants to be walking… and jesus says no let me solve a problem you didn’t even know what to ask for… your sins are forgiven… and jesus knows how to ask for it and thats when we put our lives in his hands.
54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.
Robber… a revolutionary someone trying to overturn the culture.....
56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Every day the fight is not to leave him and flee and here is where the story lands… later in 27
26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
Scourging was terrible… leather strap bones and metal… rip them apart… intestines exposed… some people died from that… I could show you… but I wont
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him.
28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
Stripped naked… and some of us have experienced that in our lives.. abuses so guilt ridden you feel naked and you cant get over them… and here we see God publicly naked…an abuse we wouldn’t want on our worst enemy.
Jesus suffers and dies not just for the sins that you do… but for the sins done against you.... some of you need to hear that today. Jesus Christ goes through it in order to reverse it and redeem you...
Read something about a pastor said the greatest thing after so many sermons… after a 45 minute sermon… I feel like God loves me more than I ever have in my life… and thats what I want you to feel even in this moment… thats why he did this… thats what motivates the suffering and the agony and the sorrow because he loves you and wants to redeem those experiences… dont leave the gift unopened.. you have to apply it to the guilt and betrayal..
29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Pressed into his skull.. they are beating him and naked… and some people would already be dead....
30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.
31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
The gospels don’t go into a lot of details of what the crucifixion experience was like… but cs lewis pointed out
The only time they ever started making art and printing jesus on a crucifix was when everyone who had seen a crucifx used was already dead
Because Constintine outlawed crucifixition in 300… and it was so horrible that the gospel writers almost just gave no details… it was tragic… and the mocking… every had anyone mock you… whats this guy accomplished that they are mocking me?
Ever heard a friend talking about youbehind your back? This is what he is going through...
They took him to Galgotha the place of the skull… two robbers...
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
THis was when theyd bring sacrifices… the looking back at passover..... this was the moment when that would have been happening… this is the ultimate bloodshed… then he says....
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
His dying voice… powerful.... they actually site the aramaic He is saying look he has said father over and over… and according to the psalms here he switches it… and something is going on… and isaiah says it pleased the lord to crush him.... and there is this moment of crushing… my god why have you forsaken me.,. I feel abandoned here… I cant be unified with sin and the complexity of what is going.... and here there is a forsakenness to accomplish the atonement for us...
Nopt only is it for us but its vertical...
47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
One of the saddest verses in the whole Bible… Jesus dies.... and then matthew gives us a hint about what it all means…
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Temple was built for God to be accessed… it would keep the normalk people out… and it was all about atonement and forgiveness of sin… and because of the cross it is no longer necessary.... religion cant save you because Jesus and his work is what will save you… and humankind is invited in… and sin is invited in principple…
STOP?
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Do you look at this weekend with AWE? and shift from skepticisim to awe… he truly is the son of god.... this is the definitive question
