His Silence Took Our Reproach (1-15)
Jesus answered nothing in the face of false accusations.
Isaiah 53:7 “7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.”
Pilate marveled at his non-answers. Crucify Him the crowd demanded, “Why, what evil has He done?”
Jesus’ silence in the face of false accusations has given us freedom from condemnation.
Rom 8:33-34 “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”
Rom 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

His Suffering Bore Our Retribution (16-32)
The beating, scourging, and mocking that Jesus suffered were in place of our just penalty for sin.
Isa 53:4-6 “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
The penalty (wage) of sin is death, but Christ has borne our death penalty so that we might receive the free gift of eternal life. Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
He bore the full weight of the suffering (verse 23) in rejecting a form of pain killer.

Creation trembled at the death of its Creator.
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross has removed our separation from the Father due to sin.
The penalty has been paid!
He is the Son of God!
