We left Peter Friday night distant from Jesus. He was an observer of the cross, the burial, the words Jesus spoke, the things Jesus did… but Peter found himself distant… filled with regret, confusion and fear.
Peter spent Saturday...
Grieved over Jesus’ death
Broken over the regrets
But the TOMB… it felt so final
SUNDAY MORNING would find Peter stayed back at the house while the women went to the tomb… why endure more grief?
But the women came running back… He’s Alive, He’s alive!
Even after running to the tomb… seeing it empty… Peter goes away perplexed!
Jesus would visit the disciples that evening very briefly… but due to Thomas not being there Jesus would return again.
Peter would no doubt be excited to see Jesus but we see him staying distant through this time
We cannot equate excitement, or even joy and happiness as being close with Christ
Do you come here this morning wanting the joy, excitement, but really you know that there is a distance? That distance begs the question…

What Keeps Us at a Distance From Christ

The reasons can vary from person to person but I think most often we could lump them into one of the following areas if not all three...
Failing to Truly Listen
Holding onto Our Own Plans & Ideas
Using our Past Sin & Regrets as an Excuse

Failing to Truly Listen

It was not for lack of Jesus trying to prepare the disciples and Peter for what He would do: Matthew 12:40
Matthew 12:40 NASB95
for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Even the Priest knew what he had said… Matthew 27:63
Matthew 27:63 NASB95
and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’
Jesus told them in Mark 8:31 and Mark 9:31
Mark 8:31 NASB95
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mark 9:31 NASB95
For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.”
John 2:19 Jesus makes it very clear
John 2:19 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Even the prophets foretold of Jesus suffering, death and resurrection.
We have no excuse… we have the whole word of God
We have the opportunity to hear from God’s Word on Sundays, in the car, on our headsets, and most of us probable have multiple copies of God’s Word… BUT WE TOO FAIL TO LISTEN… we turn a deaf ear
Sometimes we really fail to listen because we hold onto our plans, rather than listen to His plan and will...

Holding Onto Our Plans & Ideas

No doubt they believed Jesus to be who He said He was… “The Christ, Son of the Living God” but in their minds they saw Him overthrowing Rome, taking the throne, setting up His kingdom… joy, bliss, victory, excitement…
This will happen one day… but God had a different plan, a different timeline, and a different idea of how to go about things.
Peter didn't want the suffering
Peter didn’t want to wait
Peter liked his ideas
We often can distract ourselves with our plans, ideas, and ways of doing things because they serve as a great distraction from looking in the mirror… seeing our sin. Peter is excited Christ is Risen… but that sin, that regret...

Using Our Past Regrets & Sin as an Excuse

Others may not know but you do. Peter knew his heart, his regrets, his sin…
Yes Jesus is loving but that sin
Yes Jesus is forgiving but we hold onto the regrets
We lie to ourselves… Jesus wouldn't want me now
Like somehow before we deserved Him wanting us
We have the proud heart to think we were wanted because of how good we are, the words we would say, the “good things” we would do
We tell ourselves these lies from the DEVIL thinking that somehow,
Jesus Broken Body
Jesus precious blood poured out
Jesus’ perfect life lived
Jesus’ victory by conquering death and sin ONCE FOR ALL
All of that was somehow NOT ENOUGH!!!
STOP!!! Stop remaining distant to the One who has done everything to draw close to you, to pay for your sin, to take the death that was owed by you upon Himself… WHAT TO DO… well let’s look at Peter’s Response

Peter’s Response...

Peter in his distant state went back to what he was COMFORTABLE with… fishing forgetting Jesus had called him to be a fisher of men. John records for us Peter transitioning from being distant to close… John 21:3-7
John 21:3–7 NASB95
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
Peter Hears Jesus
The distance, the night had produced nothing
The morning brought something new… Jesus calls and works amazingly
Peter Comes to Jesus
Peter can take it no more… he jumps from the boat to his Savior
Breakfast is quiet John 21:12
John 21:12 NASB95
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.
Jesus provides breakfast before they even get the fish to shore
Peter may be thinking...
Does Jesus remember
Does Jesus want me
That’s when Jesus pulls Peter aside and the conversation goes like this John 21:15-19
John 21:15–19 NASB95
So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!”
Peter Responds to Jesus
Three times… what a blessing
Love… Peter realizes he is not able to do what Jesus can do but he will give it his best
Tend, shepherd, care for My sheep… Jesus wants to use Peter
FOLLOW ME!!!
It is not enough to know about the Resurrection, Know about Jesus, you and I are to respond… and God has a plan and purpose for you! Ephesians 2:8-10
Ephesians 2:8–10 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
