Romans 8:1–4 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
It’s not the law of the Spirit of death in Christ Jesus that makes us free.
Jesus’s death did something spectacular, something miraculous, but it wasn’t setting us free.
What did Jesus’s Death do?
notice in verse 1, we have this idea of “condemnation.”
Condemnation is not “guilt.” It’s not a feeling. It’s a condition. If you’re “condemned” you have been tried and it was determined you had committed the crime and are actually guilty! It even implies a sentence has been given!
Condemnation - katakrima - n. — a legal decision of guilty in a criminal case; often with the ensuing punishment understood.
Why were we condemned? Sin.
Had we actually committed the sin? Yes. So how is it possible we aren’t condemned for it?
Verse 3: Jesus condemned sin! If we walk with Him first, make up our mind to put Him first, make up our mind to follow Him, reckon ourselves to be dead to sin,
because He condemned sin, sin no longer has power over us!
Romans 6:14 NKJV
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
we don’t have to be scared of it! the shame itself can be taken from us, IF WE WALK WITH HIM! We have His power available to overcome it! Before His death condemned sin, mankind was helpless against sin. Unable to say “no.”
Because of Jesus’s death, the thing that condemned us has been judged and found guilty!!!
What did Jesus’s Resurrection do?
What is spiritual death?
we have a spiritual connection to God. We all had it, but sin killed it in us.
Romans 7:9–11 NKJV
9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.
was it physical death that sin brought to Paul?
We have death proof life! Before Jesus, even EATING FRUIT caused spiritual death in us!
Ephesians 2:1 NKJV
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
Spiritual death means the Holy Spirit isn’t in you. Spiritual death means God’s voice is far off, not coming from inside you. Spiritual death means it’s just you in there. No God’s presence, not hearing His voice, no revelation from scripture, no gifts of the Spirit, no fruits of the Spirit. You are cut off from God and His presence.
So what’s the difference? Why is this no longer the case?
Romans 8:11 NKJV
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
because the same power has given LIFE to us, it’s the same kind of life Christ has! He dies no more! We have DEATH PROOF LIFE!
It is life that makes us free! Because we’re death proof, y’know what it takes to completely, COMPLETELY restore your connection to God?
Repentance! Repentance is the most incredible gift Jesus gave us and it is ONLY POSSIBLE BECAUSE HE ROSE AGAIN!
You can be a murderer and repent! You can be gone for years and repent! You can repent in the car on the way to church! You can repent while you’re at work, while you’re with your friends, while you’re at the dinner table!
Repentance is instantaneous and IT IS COMPLETE! You are FULLY AND COMPLETELY RESTORED because of repentance! Why? Because you didn’t die when you sinned.
It’s not over when you sin.
Before Christ rose from the dead, before that same power gave life to you, it was over every time. Eating fruit, was a permanent separation from God and the Holy Spirit.
How often does the enemy tell you it’s over when you sin? How often do you say it’s hopeless because of sin?
THE SAME POWER THAT RAISED CHRIST FROM THE DEAD MEANS IT’S NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER AGAIN HOPELESS!!!
