Mother behold your son, Son behold your mother.

John 19:26–27 NRSV
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
My maternal grandmother took people into her house all the time when I was growing up. One time I can remember she took in a young teenage girl who was a friend of my cousin’s due to some family issues and could not go back to the house. She took her in as if she was one of her own grandchildren. She had to follow the rules of the house and live how my grandmother taught, which was always about the goodness and love of Jesus Christ. Anyone who came into the house would know about Jesus when they left. As the trust grew in her and our family, Renee God rest her soul looking nothing like us. She was a thin, tall, strawberry blond with pale pink skin and freckles. And yet blood had nothing to do with her becoming part of our family and even permanently by marriage later in our years. So tonight I want ask this question, what’s blood got to do with it?
Her in our passage tonight we find ourselves at the foot of the cross where Jesus has now observed that his mother who is a widow is now about to loose her son the one who had taken care of her since she joined them on the Way. I can image what he was thinking back then a woman with no husband and the child that was taking care of her was before them and going to die. Who was going to protect and care for her like I did, who is going to continue to teach her the Way, like I did. I can hear a conversation going on between Jesus and his father asking of him who is going to look after my mother, the one you blessed to bring me into this world, who is going to take care of her now, And as Jesus looked down upon them from the hill where he was nailed to the cross, he saw his disciple that loved Jesus so much and would do anything for him if asked. As he listened to his father, Jesus called out to them and gives a command to them that they are now mother and son. What does blood have to do with it?
When the command was given immediately John took in Marry the mother of Jesus. No kin to each other by blood. I guess you could say this was his step son and she was his step mother. Yet the word tells us that Jesus said this is your son and this is your mother. No blood kin yet kin by the words and belief in Jesus Christ and the relationship that was born our of trust and obedience. We are the only ones in society that say we have half brothers/sisters, step moms, dads, or what I just learned this week Bonus dad. For me I never new of those words even though yes my family is blended, but even though my sister is not connected to me by blood she is my sister never the less, why because we have a bond a relationship that brings us together as sister. We need to stop talking about half this and step that because if God brought the family together rather blood was biological or not, it does not matter to him and it should not matter to us because of the relationship that is formed. You see, Renee was no kin to us and yet she became our family through relationship and trust that come with a price. What was that price, the price was she had to give of herself and we had to give of ourselves as a sacrifice
What’s blood got to do with it? I am glad you have pondered on that question tonight. By his blood we are saved. By his blood we believe. By his blood we are joint heirs to the Kingdom a royal priesthood of believers. By his blood we came into right relationship with him and anyone else that believes in his birth, death and resurrection. His blood brings us together as a community of believers that are no way related by bloo but by our belief in the savior and the blood of Jesus Christ.
Yes, what does the blood have to do with it? It has to do with your life that you could not save, yet someone introduced you to the one who could save you with his blood! What’s blood have to do with it? Without it you would not survive in this world. We are related by His blood, because we believe in the one who shes his blood to redeem our souls. What’s love got to do with it? All that and more!
