Matthew 26:17-35

One of the most moving scenes in the history of man! All of the most moving scenes are from Christ Jesus!
This is where Jesus, Lord and Messiah, sits amongst a betrayer, a denier, and the rest who scatter as His passion begins. The mercy shown here is unfathomable! It is nothing but supernatural!
Jesus showing His death through this supper and revealing the betrayer and the denier! Jesus was amongst sinful people, going to redeem them, all the while they are still sinning against God! Understand clearly, all that Jesus ever did, while in the earthly flesh, was to do the will of the Father. He never disobeyed, He never shirked His anointing! NO human can ever state that claim for themselves!
I just want to deal briefly with the supper...........it is not the meal......it is a moment that Jesus used during this supper to make a mark of remembrance of what was to come, something that probably confused the disciples at the time, but when Jesus was on the cross, this moment in the history of their minds became perfectly clear!
Jesus grabbed the bread, take eat for this is My body....
Mark’s acct: Mark 14:22 “And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.”
Luke’s acct: Luke 22:19 “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
Jesus instituted it this way with the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
The body of the Lord Jesus was broken for you.......this is the remembrance.......Think of the importance in this.......Jesus takes this time to make sure we remember what? His death on the cross..........This is where God’s wrath has been poured upon the body of Jesus!!
No bones were broken on Jesus, but His appearance was mutilated beyond recognition!
This should keep fresh in our memory how serious the sin against God and also the love that God has for us!
Jesus wants this to be ever present in our minds and hearts! Remember!!!
My body which was broken for you!!!
Isaiah 53 gives a stark vision of this which we will read in it’s entirety briefly Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.”
Jesus then moves to the cup.......the Blood of the covenant........As I spoke about this morning, the lambs that was sacrificed that could not take away sin....Jesus was now going to shed His for the remission, for the pardon, for the forgiveness of sins!
John 12:27 “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”
This is the reason He has come into the world to save the world from their sins!
This is why His body was broken and why His blood was shed!
I am going to bombard you all with verses........
Colossians 1:14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
Colossians 1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”
Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Hebrews 9:28 “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
1 John 2:2 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Lastly 1 Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
These are brought to life here, even tonight, by this institution of this remembrance of Jesus Christ through what He showed the disciples and us!
Here again, we see that Jesus did this, not us, He gave it to man...........
We must remember and keep this covenant in the frontlet of our eyes, ever on our hearts and minds!
Paul said this in 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.”
One bread and one body, because we are all partakers of Jesus Christ and Him crucified!
This is all........There is nothing else to give...........1 Corinthians 1:17-18 “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”
Let’s go ahead and turn to 1 Corinthians 11 and get ready for the supper
Before we begin the supper let’s take a moment to examine ourselves......not eat and drink unworthily.......despite some rejections to this, according to Paul that you could drink damnation, sickness, even death........not sure of the hearts of those that died.......but the main part you should focus on is...... “Am I coming to the Lord’s table, with clear understanding the Jesus died for my sins, I understand that He is perfect and I am not, and that there is sincere sorrow within me for my sins. a confession of my sins to God, and a belief that through Jesus Christ He has forgiven me”
Let’s take a moment and examine ourselves!!!
1 Corinthians 11:23-26......The Lord’s Supper......
