2022-4-17, Easter, Isaiah: Redemption Foretold, Jesus Rose From Death So You Can Too, Isaiah 53:10 & Assorted Verses
The prophets said the Redeemer would be raised from the dead.
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
How would he see His offspring if vs. 8 says He would be cut off out of the land of the living and vs. 9 said that “they made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man in His death.” ?
In order to do this, the redeemer must be raised from the dead.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
Paul teaches us the interpretation of this in
29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Further, the resurrection is the fulfillment of Jesus’ words, proving Jesus was Prophet in addition to Redeemer, priest, and king.
31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”
The prophets said He would be raised.
Trust that God’s word should be taken at face value and passages should interpret one another.
The Scriptures teach that Jesus rose from the dead to fulfill God’s promise to David.
God had promised that...
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
and Isaiah confirms that the coming Redeemer would fulfil this role.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
So how would this work if the Suffering Servant, the heir to David’s throne, dies in order to atone for our sins?
3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
“The Davidic Covenant promised David that his seed would be ruler over Israel in an everlasting kingdom. Paul connected the resurrection of Jesus Christ with this promise.” (JM 1015-1016)
34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,
“ ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
Jesus rose from the dead because death had no right to Him.
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
and Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Yet,
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The result is things are not right if a sinless man is dead. So...
24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
This the stage for our greatest point today.
Jesus rose from the dead to demonstrate God’s will to redeem our bodies.
What do you do with people like you and me who’ve had our sins cancelled out by the atonement of Christ on the cross?
If the wages of is is death, what happens when we no longer have any sin-debt?
This means sin no longer has a right to us.
This has some incredible implications.
First, our souls become alive in Him.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
and...
12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Our souls have already been redeemed and belong to Him. We know that when our bodies die, our souls will be with Him.
8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
But what about our bodies? Death has no right to them either.
14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
and
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
That’s exciting and hopeful.
So, by the cross and resurrection, our greatest enemies have been defeated. Sin, death, and the devil
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
1 Corinthians 15:55
55 “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
Since these things are true, they make a difference:
We possess a new royal status through faith in Christ (John 1:12).
We have the same power for obedience demonstrated in the resurrection (Ephesians 1:19-20).
We possess the authority of Jesus’ name to contribute our part in God’s redemption plan (Mt. 28:18).
We own an incredible hope that as Jesus was raised, so shall we (1 Thessalonians 4:16).”
A change should happen in our lives in light of the truth of the empty tomb:
We should live in peace as we own our identity in Christ (Romans 6:1-4)
We should have the desire and boldness to live for Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:15).
No fear of what humanity fears (rejection, death)
Bold obedience in our mission to declare Christ (1 Peter 2:9).
We should actively dream of the day we will be raised and with Him, with redeemed bodies, in the New Jerusalem.”
