Luke 19:37–44 NKJV
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” 41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
The Final Week of the Lord Jesus Christ
Palm Sunday
Triumphal Entry
It’s ironic because while it seemed to be a day of celebration, it was actually a time of sorrow for the Lord Jesus.
The designation of this event as the triumphal entry is actually a Misnomer.
Why triumphal entry — people think it is the first time Jesus successfully entered Jerusalem.
It is more the “Untriumphal Entry” (Title of the message)
Why did the Lord Jesus enter Jerusalem riding a donkey on that day?
To fulfill prophecy from the past.
Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
Jesus presented Himself as thee Messiah
Why did the Lord Jesus enter Jerusalem riding a donkey on that day?
2. To Inaugurate His final week in the present.
The Lord Jesus came to die.
Matthew 21:9 NKJV
9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!”
this attention and adulation by the crowd is an acceleration of the events of His death.
The Hour has come.
Why did Jesus enter Jerusalem riding a donkey that day?
3. To Foreshadow His return in the future.
Psalm 118:24–26 NKJV
24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save now, I pray, O Lord; O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
Hosanna = “Please Save Us”
Zechariah 14:4 NKJV
4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.
What happened after the Lord entered Jerusalem?
The rest of the day became uneventful.
People had an agenda.
Jesus was not the King or military general that they envisioned Him to be.
He did not fit the bill. He was not the King of their liking.
Examine ourselves:
Is Jesus really King, or is He only King to our Liking?
examples here… do you even look forward to His future coming?
The heart of Jesus:
Instead of reveling in the crowd’s adulation and joyous celebration around Him, the Lord did something quite unexpected — human leaders relish the attention they get to themselves — but not the Lord Jesus...
Luke is special. Recorded Jesus weeping - more of a lamentation.
Luke 19:41 NKJV
41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,
Jesus was overcome with extreme sorrow..
Why did Jesus weep over the city?
Jesus wept over Jerusalem:
Because of His great love for Jerusalem.
Luke 19:42 NKJV
42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Jerusalem == city of peace ==instead a city of weeping
Jesus wept over Jerusalem:
2. Because He foresaw its coming destruction:
Luke 19:43 NKJV
43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side,
40 years later, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in AD 70
Jesus wept over Jerusalem:
3. Because He grieves the punishment of people’s sins.
Luke 19:44 NKJV
44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
very descriptive..
massacre over 600,000 Jews
destruction of their most holy site - not one stone will be left on top of another
Why was the punishment so severe?
Matthew’s version of Jesus’ lamentation over Jerusalem gives us a better perspective:
Matthew 23:37–39 NKJV
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
“because you did not know the time of your visitation” they missed out..
verse 39 == future == “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord” — foreshadowed by His entry to Jerusalem that day.
Their greatest sin was that they rejected Jesus… I came in My Father’s Name and you did not accept Me...
God grieves for the punishment of people’s sins.
Ezekiel 33:11 NKJV
11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
Not only for Israel, but for everyone:
The Lord grieves that those who do not accept Him will perish.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
the promise here is the return of Jesus ==> God has delayed it to give the world more time to repent.
Jesus came for Israel, they rejected Him, but in their rejection, grace was extended to the Gentiles, the whole world,, someday time will run out...
The same heart that grieved deeply over Jerusalem, yearns for you today...
He loves you, He foresees what is coming (His return), He does not want anyone to perish..
In fact, Jesus...
1 Timothy 2:4 ESV
4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
This is why Jesus came in the first place, why we study His final week, He died on the cross.
