The Resurrection

It is interesting to note that the Sabbath would have ended at sunset on Saturday. The first day of the week would have been Sunday. The idea that the ladies were in a hurry to go to the tomb, and that they had spices declares that they were interested in completing the burial process. Remember that during the festivals and the Sabbath the burial process was interrupted and was not completed. The other issue here is that the women were showing a lack of faith, in a way, because Jesus had told them all that in three days he would rise again. 24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Lk 24:1.
Interestingly enough the gospel of Mark says that as the women walked to the tomb they discussed rolling the tomb away so they could anoint the body with spices, but Luke simply says that when they arrived the stone was rolled away. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Lk 24:2. What does this say to you? To me it speaks of great love. Even though they may have not had a clue as to how they were going to roll the stone away they went anyway. Have you had a time in your life when you did not do something because you thought it was too difficult?
In the gospel of John we find that the Disciples were hesitant to go into the tomb, but these brave ladies went right in according to the gospel of Luke. 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Lk 24:3–6. The question of the day is “Why do you seek the living among the dead”? I think of the journey of the two men on the road to Emmaus and how Jesus came among them and seemed to know of nothing that had happened. These two men (angels) seems to not know who they are looking for. To me, this is a moment where I believe that the angels know exactly who they are looking for but ask the question as if the ladies are of little faith.
English Standard Version (Chapter 24)
6 He is not here, but has risen.
English Standard Version (Chapter 24)
Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
