Scourging, Crucified and Resurrection

Story: Little Kid lost
The kid was sitting on the curb
The officer said are you lost
The kid said yes
The officer said where do you live
The kid said I dont know my address
The officer starting naming streets, stores, the mall, schoold.
The kid said none of that rings a bell
The officer remembered in the middle of town their was a church and on the top was a very lit cross.
The officer said son do you live anywhere near that cross?
The kid said YES, bring me to the cross and I will find my way home.
This is so true with us....
Bring us to the CROSS and we will find our way back home again.
INTRO:
Luke 23:20-25 “Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.” But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.”
Teaching: Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but the crowd shouted louder and louder, so Pilate sentenced Jesus to die.
No doubt Pilate did not want to risk losing his position, which may already have been shaky, by allowing a riot to occur in his province.
As a career politician, he knew the importance of compromise
POINT #1
Scourging: Matthew 27:25-26 “And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.” Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.”
TEACHING - Scourged - The flogging that Jesus received was part of the Roman legal code, which demanded that flogging precede capital punishment.
The Romans did it to weaken the prisoner so that he would die more quickly on the cross.
The usual procedure was to bare the upper half of the victim’s body and tie the hands to a pillar before whipping the victim with a lead-tipped whip.
The whip had many strands that where 2-3 ft long, glass, stones
The continued lashing with these sharp instruments tore at the victim’s skin, even baring the bones.
Some scholars call this device the Cat of Nine Tails
After the flogging, Pilate handed Jesus over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him
Cross referance: Isaiah 53:5 “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”
Application: He took the punishment for us. The perfect spotless lamb./
FITNESS: Remember when you are jump roping today the scouraging of Jesus body.
Remember This word in the scourging - Jump Rope.......HUMILITY
POINT #2
CRUCIFY: John 19:17 “And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,”
Teaching: In being led out to be crucified, condemned prisoners (who had already been flogged) would carry the crossbeam of their own cross.
This crossbeam weighed about one hundred pounds and was carried across the shoulders.
The heavy crossbeam was placed on Jesus’ already bleeding shoulders (John 19:17), and he began the long walk out of Jerusalem. Usually execution sites were outside of the city.
The pain of being on the cross was the breathing.
18,His movements up and down the Cross to breathe caused excruciating pain in His wrist, His feet, and His dislocated elbows and shoulders.
19,The movements became less frequent as Jesus became increasingly exhausted, but the terror of imminent death by asphyxiation forced Him to continue in His efforts to breathe.
20,Jesus’ lower limb muscles developed excruciating cramp from the effort of pushing down on His legs, to raise His body, so that He could breathe out, in their anatomically compromised position.
Remember when you are breathing hard today. Just remember the breathe that Jesus did not have that went on for over 6 hours on the cross.
Crossreferance: Luke 9:23 “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
John 19:28-30 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”
THREE Most Important words
IT IS FINISHED = tetelestai = Paid In Full = Fulfilled
Basically our debt that we owed was paid by our KING
Application: Pick up your cross daily,
We can’t have the resurrection without the Crucifixion.
We cant have these fitness results without crucifying our flesh.
Thats why there are many of before pics taken but not many after pics.
Jesus carried the cross 600m
Jesus WOD was 6hrs long from 9am-3pm
He did that because He loves YOU & I
When carrying the BArbell remember the word ENDURANCE.
It was the Endurance that Jesus showed hanging on that cross
Point #3
Resurrection: Mark 16:1-8 “Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.”
The Most Imprtortant event EVER was the Resurrection.
WHY?
Because our God is Alive
and no other god is alive
No other God is alive
APPLICATION: Today remember that your King is alive. Remember when you peel yourself off the ground and get up.
Remember He is alive and because of that you are have eternal life.
When doing your burpees remember the word; LOVE
He loved us so much that rose again as He said He would
. Jesus was severely anxious before he died. He knew the gruesome way he was about to die (Matt 26:2) and the agony of bearing the world’s sin and the full wrath of God. He was so distressed he experienced hematidrosis, a rare medical condition that occurs under extreme physical and emotional stress, causing him to sweat blood (Luke 22:44). Yet Jesus submitted to God’s will and voluntarily walked the road of suffering and death (Luke 22:42).
ONE WORD TO REMEMBER TODAY........HUMILITY
Jesus showed us all how to be a humble servant.
He humbly went to the Cross and took on the sins of the world
so we would have eternal life.
