Intro:

Epitaph of Grace Llewellen Smith
“Sleeps, but rests not. Loved, but was loved not. Tried to please, but please not. Died as she lived . . . alone.”
How many Grace Llewellen Smiths are out there?
People dying in the loneliness they live in.
The homeless, happy hour hopper, the preacher, those who wonder if the world needs them; the person who wonders if anyone really cares.
Any person who has been given a ring but not a heart; criticism but never a chance; a bed but never rest.
All victims of futility.
What do you think this emptiness and need is symptomatic of?
We all have a need of and struggle for significance.
The need of a Savior.
What do you think the basic human need for belonging and feeling loved can lead us to ?
Ephesians 2:3–5 ESV
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
When we turn to God we become alive!
God created a hunger for significance within each one of us.
Do you agree/disagree
Why/why not?
Psalm 107:9 ESV
9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

Look Back

Chapter 4 we see the conversation between Jesus and Nicodeemas

Jesus, then, had to go through Samaria because it was the shortest and the normal way people travelled between Jerusalem and Galilee

BUT
What happens later in the story we can see there was a DIVINE need not just geographical
READ John chapter 4:1-14
What are characteristics you see in the Samaritan woman’s story?
VS 6—she drew the water at noon—custom was to draw water when the sun was not too high in the sky.
She wanted to avoid contact with other people. WHY?
Can you relate to her desire to avoid the “water drawing hour”?
Look at vs 9
What does John say about the relationship between the Jews and Samaritans?
*She had experienced the sting of racism, sexism, and knew what it meant to love but not be loved in return.
Here Jesus is crossing all the lines—He is having conversation with a woman — who is Samaritan. She may have wondered the last time she had been spoken to with such respect.
Which of these areas can you relate to most in your life? WHY?
Interestingly, Jesus who had nothing with which to draw water, offered this woman who was equipped to draw water a drink.
HOWEVER, it wasn’t just a sip to quench her thirsty throat but to quench her soul.
Not merely a drink but an artesan well
John 7:37 ESV
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
ANYONE who is thirst come--
**God is a God who invites
**God is a God who calls
**The invitation here is an invitation to life—it is universal and personal!!
Why do you think Jesus asked the woman for a drink?
Our souls are thirsty
What do we use or do to quench that thirst?
Look at Jesus’ response to the woman after she asked for the water so she wouldn’t have to come back there.
how did this speak truth to her rather than condemnation?
Did He say her situation was ok?
Is there a sin in your life you have held back because of your fear of God’s reaction?
What do you feel Jesus is calling you to do today to expose that sin to the light?
What question was the woman asking that showed a gaping hole in her life/heart?
John 4:19–20 ESV
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
Where is God?
2 Chronicles 7:1 (ESV)
1 As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.
Acts 7:49 ESV
49 “ ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
John 4:23 ESV
23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
