The Good Shepherd: He Knows the Ground Where He is Leading Us
The Good Shepherd: He Knows the Ground Where He is Leading Us
20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
He knows the ground where he is leading us—he leads us to the fruitful grounds of Calvary—Golgotha—Sacrifice—hating our present life for the riches of eternal life
The Desire to See Jesus
20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
Nothing else is said but Greeks wanted to see Jesus
Not uncommon to want to see Jesus: Since his ministry then to now he has been known as the great provider
These Greeks no doubt heard about his works and the fruit people got
But the teaching of Jesus shows us objectively why we should seek Jesus
And that is.....
To see Jesus is for him to be glorified
22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Jesus is glorified in dying and providing life by his death
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Jesus is glorified in this death/life paradigm having application to us
25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
We show its application in following Jesus (in his death and life)
26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
We follow Jesus in how he handles trouble
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
We follow Jesus in his desire for the Father to be glorified
This connects us with the song of ages: “I have glorified it and I will glorify it again”
28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
