Can you imagine a time when news only spread by word of mouth?
(READ LUKE 24:13-35)
The initial stories of the ressurection were fresh. Word had spread. The most amazing news of all time.
Where was Jesus?
With two men 7 miles from Jerusalem. What?
Luke is the only gospel where this story is told.

1. The Church Will Tell Others of the Ressurection.

Where would you choose to go if you were Jesus?
Jesus revealed himself to the church and gave the spiritual mandate to be “witnesses” (Acts 1:8).
The two men were discouraged and confused.
Their hopes had been dashed. They expected the Messiah to redeem them from Roman rule and set them free.
(18) “Visitor” Grk, “dwell as a stranger”. Used in later greek of strangers who had no rights of citizenship, and no settled home.
They shared their flawed understanding of what happened.
Why did Jesus choose to reveal himself in this way?
Cultural Christianity often struggles with discipleship.
The plan of the Lord from the beginning is for the church to see salvation and serve as witnesses.
“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, ‘Be reconciled to God.’ He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” - (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)
The resurrection story provides every Christian the means to expand the kingdom of God.

2. The Church is Obligated to Seek Truth.

Jesus wanted to take these disciples to the truth.
He pointed to the prophets...
(READ Isaiah 53:3-5; 7-11)
Their study of scripture had been selective.
Jesus is the son of God, seated on his throne, interceding fo us, crowned in glory. But He had to suffer to get there.
Reading is pointless if there is no retention.
Jesus used the scripture to explain the resurrection. (OT)
There is truth out there for the taking.
“How does God speak to me?” We must always start with the word of God.
Are we seeking truth from the Lord? If not, then what are we seeking instead?

3. The Church Remembers Christ’s Sacrifice

This is so cool!
They went from Bible Study to a personal visit. Jesus was invited but he assumed the role of host.
Their hearts turned when he taught them, but turned when they saw the nail scarred hands.
This puts an important focus on the Lord’s Supper.
(READ Luke 22:14-23)
My parents in DC with WWII veterans.
We can’t forget. We must reminder ourselves on a daily basis of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.
