Promise of the Cornerstone

Isaiah 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.

promise of the Sovereign Lord

a tested stone - he was without sin

precious - more precious than all else

Philippians 3:8  I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ

a sure foundation

the cornerstone aligns the whole structure - right orientation, solid foundation

Christ’s church is built on Jesus

Zechariah 10:4  From Judah will come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler.

the whole depends upon this one piece

yet the devil, the world and man within it - rejection of this cornerstone

Cornerstone Rejected

Psalm 118:22–24 NIV

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.

a flawed stone will fail

it will align the wrong way

it will collapse under pressure

it will create instability in the whole structure

Jesus came to restore and heal completely the world of man

yet he was rejected

hallelujah this was God’s plan all along

for Jesus was not flawed nor imperfect in any way - he was without sin

mankind rejected him

Acts 4:10-11

then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.  Jesus is “ ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’

Peter testified to the fulfillment of God’s plan

the absolutely right cornerstone, the measure by which all things come into place

this cornerstone is Jesus

Good Friday

this is the most important day in history

it is not Christmas because Jesus was only born but not yet tested

he had opportunity to sin

it is not Easter Sunday because this is a day of rejoicing the victory

the work of redemption was done on the cross not on his resurrection

death of Jesus

shedding of blood is essential for the forgiveness of sin

Jesus was cursed by hanging on a tree

the blessing of Jesus was completely transformed into a curse

good became evil and evil was called good

statement 1 - why have you forsaken me Mark 15: 34

Forsaken and Rejected

here was totally despair - Jesus was forsaken

he was completely cut off from God

we have all been separated from our heavenly Father yet Jesus is the only way to fully know that despair

Jesus was rejected by his Father because he was sin in the sight of God

hence the full penalty of sin was paid by the complete innocence of Christ

We all have been forsaken and rejected

we all can be redeemed for

it is finished
