Exodus 12:3–12 AV
Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’S passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
Mark 14:17–25 AV
And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
Matthew’s gospel records:
Matthew 26:17 AV
Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
Whereas John’s gospel records:
John 13:1–2 AV
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
So then for the untrained eye and for the casual observe there seems to be a contradiction. Did Jesus die on the passover or did Jesus die the day before the passover? Did Jesus eat and celebrate the passover with his disciples?
Ans: Let’s see what the scriptures says.
Jesus says in Matthew 26:18
Matthew 26:18 AV
And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
Jesus says that he wants to keep the passover with his disciples. These are Jesus’ words coming from his own mouth. Ahhh.....so Jesus had to die on the passover.
But let’s consider another scripture:
Matthew 26:3–5 AV
Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
Why would there be an uproar among the people? Because for one, many people believed Jesus to be a prophet and that would have been very unpopular. But then there is a second reason, because the passover is not only a celebration or a feast day. But because the passover was considered to be a high sabbath day.
Leviticus 23:5–8 AV
In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
The word “sabbath” means to rest. Notice here, Moses says in the fourteenth day at even or evening begins the passover. During this particular week, because remember that the Jews didn’t adhere by the Julian Calendar....which is similar to what we go by today. Passover doesn’t always fall on Friday according to our calendar. But this time.....Passover was on a Friday. Remember that sundown typically counted as the next day for the Jews.
Remember that according to the law, there was a day of preparation right? Exodus 16, before the Sabbath....we are talking the normal sabbath now. There was a day of ingathering and preparing meals to eat prior to the sabbath day because on the sabbath....no work was to be done this is called “The Day of Preparation”. Ahhhhh but now considering the time in which the passover fell, there were two consecutive days of rest Friday and Saturday, so they had to get everything done Thursday even or afternoon and it had to be done before sundown.
So the first day of unleavened bread was not so much the 15th but according to the law of Moses (Lev 23) it started on the 14th.
So the Lord said he wanted to celebrate the passover with his disciples. So they do as Jesus commanded, the go to a house and speak with a man and told the man that “The Master saith, my time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.”
Jesus eats and celebrates the passover with his disciples:
But there is something very noticeable that is missing here. They had bread, they had wine, but where was the lamb!? How can you celebrate passover without a lamb. Notice Jesus’ words:
Mark 14:22 AV
And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
Then:
Mark 14:23–24 AV
And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Then afterwards, they sing Psalms 118 and then go to the Mount of Olives where he would be betrayed.
So on Nisan 14th, the day of preparation for both the passover and sabbath.
They nailed Jesus to the cross and the scriptures record that he was nailed during the same time as the morning sacrifice 9:00am.
So Jesus hung from the 3 to the 9th hour and around 3:00pm during the time of the evening sacrifice, Jesus opened his mouth and said “It Is Finished” and gave up the ghost. All of the prophecies concerning the Messiah, all the prophecies concerning his death, all of the prophecies concerning the coming of the new covenant, the new covenant was consummated (put into affect) by the shedding of his blood and by his death. The true LAMB, the lamb without spot or blemish, the perfect lamb, Jesus the Lamb of God who was without sin.....gave his life so that we could receive forgiveness of sin!
John the Baptist prophesied of Jesus when he said:
John 1:29 AV
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
So now we see....now we understand that Jesus was the lamb all along. When they set at the table and Jesus told them to take eat....this is my body, they were symbolically eating the lamb of God.
This is why Jesus told them:
John 6:53 AV
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Just like we have to depend on natural food to live, we need water to live, because without them we will die. We need Jesus to live a spiritual life, we have to depend on Jesus, we have to look to Jesus, WE NEED JESUS!!!
Jesus is the Paschal Lamb! He is the Lamb that was slain, he is the lamb that came to take away the sins of the world! He is the Lamb that gives us access to God!
Conclude with 1 Cor 11:23-30
1 Corinthians 11:23–30 AV
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
