Jesus on the Cross
This morning as we gather to celebrate Easter
I want us to understand Jesus on the Cross
Last week we celebrated Jesus coming into Jerusalem
We pointed out that the nation of Israel missed the coming King because they were looking for the wrong thing
It was pointed out to me that the reason it was not a horse or even the a colt which is a baby horse
Is because the horse meant warrior
That is not what Jesus was coming to do
And also how we miss the work of God in and around our lives because we are so focused on the wrong things
We saw how Jesus cried on His way into Jerusalem and we can probably agree that part of that cry was because He knew what it would cost Him to save you to save me
That is where we are this morning
Please hear me this morning
Jesus willingly went to the cross
Romans 5:8–9 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
Let that sink in on the Easter morning
Jesus willingly went to the cross for you
Look to your neighbor and tell them that Jesus willingly went to the cross for you
Now the other neighbor
Now me
Church Jesus willingly went to die on the cross to pay for your debt of sin
Christ loved us so much that while we were still sinners
We haven't yet repented of our sin and trusted in Jesus and begun to follow Him
For some they never will do that and yet Jesus still loved them enough to die for them so that they have the option to choose to follow Jesus or not
Wow praise the Lord we serve a God who loves you and I that much
Remember that sin required death
And all the way back in Genesis God killed an animal to cover the sin of Adam and Eve
Blood had to be shed for your sin and mine
You may sit here this morning and think that you have no sin in your life
I am here to tell you, you are wrong
You have sinned, I have sinned your neighbor has sinned
Sin is the bad things you have done in your life
The lying, the stealing, the cheating, the disobeying your parents
That is all sin
And because of the sin you and I deserve death
But has we have seen that Jesus loved you and I so much that He went to the cross and died in our place
The cross for Jesus was obedience
Matthew 26:36–38 NASB95
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”
This is on the night that Jesus is going to be arrested
Jesus had finished the Last Supper, the Passover Meal
Jesus and the remaining 11 disciples had left the upper room and gone to pray
Jesus leaves 7 of them maybe at the entrance of the garden, and takes James, John and Peter further into the garden to pray
Then Jesus leaves them and goes deeper into the garden Himself
Then Jesus is going to pray a prayer that if we are honest is so very very difficult for us to pray because we are humans, and we have a sin nature and live in a fallen world
Matthew 26:39 NASB95
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
This is the prayer Jesus Prayed
God if there is any way to save this people whom you and I love so much lets do that
But
In this case yet
Now what I was God the Father but what you want
Jesus is telling God the Father whatever your will is I will be obedient to it
Jesus is demonstrating obedience for us
Leon Forsyth Story
Jesus knew the cross would be painful
But Jesus also knew that He was going to take on the entire worlds sin for all time
And because of that God would pour His entire wrath out on Him
And because God cannot be a part of sin for the first time ever God the Father and God the Son would be separated
And Jesus knew all of this and He was still obedient to go to the cross and die in your place and in my place to pay our debt of sin
John 19:16–18 NASB95
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. 17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
They, the Romans had crucified Jesus after being handed over to them by the Jews
Now they watch and wait
They are waiting for Jesus to die
They are mocking Jesus and still waiting for Jesus to die
Lets be clear, Jesus could have called on angels to save Him, He could have gotten off the cross
But He didn’t, because your sin and my sin needed dealing with
His love for you and I was so great that is what kept in on the cross
The Roman’s did not kill Jesus
Crucifixion did not kill Jesus
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
This has to be one of the best verses in all of scripture
This is Jesus declaring that sin is dealt with once and for all
That death and sin no longer rule over us if we repent and believe
That it is finished church
Then Jesus gave up His spirit
Jesus gave up His spirit because of His love for you and I
You see church this is the message of the cross
It is that Jesus loved you and I
CLOSING
As be move into a time of invitation
The Cross is Jesus’s sign of love for you and I
With His death he paid for our sin
and because of that you and I can be debt free this morning
And church with His resurrection 3 days after he gave up his spirit we have life
You can be debt free and a new life this morning if you will repent of your sin and trust in Jesus this morning
There will be people down front who would love to talk with you and pray with you
Or maybe you are here and simply need to spend time in prayer at the altar this morning
The altar is open
