17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
We think of death as the end, like the last chapter of a book that will never be opened again
Everyone who has gone on before us are in our future.
We can worship God because this is not the end this is the path to the greatest
Jesus rose from the dead so that we could have the best ahead in the future
The resurrection is not an event it is a Person - Jesus didn’t just raise from the dead He is the resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most influential event that has ever taken place. The resurrection is the most powerful exclamation of truth to ever exist.
The resurrection is demonstratively the most exciting occurrence and the greatest historical presentation of hope and love.
We mark on our calendar - Easter - or Resurrection Sunday - What we celebrate today is not just a holiday We celebrate the risen Lamb of God who has power over the grave
When Jesus rose from the dead, it started a new era of power and hope
Since Adam and Eve disobeyed God, there has been a curse on humanity and on the entire world.
This curse could only be broken by one Man
This curse of death, this curse of separation, this curse of destruction could only be broken by the prophesied
God showed that the sin curse and death curse would be forever broken by the chosen one, the messiah
The day would come death would forever die
There is an even that would forever set mankind free from sin and death
1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.
4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13 And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
This is a picture of what we were before we were saved
There was a noise and shaking
Bones, sinews, muscles, flesh coming together as he’s preaching but there was no breath
vs 9
God created you, he put you together in your mothers womb
He put breath in you
God raised them from the dead
vs 12 preach more
come up out of your graves - this is resurrection
The historical application is to Israel But there is also a future truth that is applicable to us today-
Before we get saved, we are empty, dead people walking
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
But God, when we put our faith in the risen LORD, resurrects us and brings new life into us
God put His Spirit in you and not only do you have new life today if you are born again, but one day in the future you will come out of your grave - there will be a resurrection
The true resurrection will come
1. The Resurrection Establishes His Authority Over All Creation
1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: And he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, Neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, And reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: And he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, And with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, And faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, And the leopard shall lie down with the kid; And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; Their young ones shall lie down together: And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, And the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea.
Jesus came from the lineage of King David
vs 2
Jesus sees into the spirit and the heart, he knows real motives
He will rule in righteousness
Jesus will make all of creation perfect again
Jesus is King over all creation - there will be no more death, Jesus will completely destroy sin and death
Acts 17:30–31 (KJV 1900)
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Repentance is a realization of your sin and an acknowledgement of Jesus’ righteousness
The resurrection assures us that Jesus is coming back to finish the job of having all authority over His Creation.
1 Corinthians 15:24–28 (KJV 1900)
24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
the end, when death itself shall be destroyed, all enemies conquered, and the kingdom of an emancipated universe finally handed back by the Mediator to the Father.
2. The Resurrection Confirms Jesus as the Last Adam that Brings New Creation Life Into Believers
Adam, because of disobedience, brought sin and death into the world - God through Jesus the Messiah, would bring the life, the resurrection, the antidote and cure for sin - through Jesus
21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Death burial, and resurrection brings new life to anyone that comes to Jesus
The God-man brought the new life
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV 1900)
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
When Jesus was resurrected, He brought out of the grave new creation, resurrected life for all who would accept the gift of salvation offered to man.
Jesus said - I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly
3. The Resurrection Made the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Possible
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
We have been made spirit
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
There was a quickening - a conferring of the Spirit into you when you were saved
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
No matter where you have been, what you've done - Jesus said come
John 7:38–39 (KJV 1900)
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Jesus had to be Glorified before the Holy Spirit could be given - The resurrection made possible God to live inside you
4. The Resurrection Completes Our Justification, Freeing Us From Sin, The Flesh, and the Devil
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
If Jesus just died, that wouldn’t have been enough to save your soul from Hell and resurrect your dead spirit by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV 1900)
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
No resurrection = No Salvation
Jesus must conquer death to be able to give eternal life
Your salvation is tied to the resurrection of Jesus
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
As Jesus conquered the grave, he was making a way for you to be able to stand before a Holy God completely justified = just as if you never sinned
His death, burial, and resurrection make it possible for you to be saved
If you’ve never called out on Him to save you, He can and will make it possible for you to be saved as you call out on Him in faith!
Totally justified
Totally innocent
God will declare not guilty when you stand before Him if you have Gone to the Cross and realized that was for me - when you go the empty tomb and say that was for me!
You do not want to leave this life without accepting the gift of salvation
Jesus was raised for your justification
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
We are free from sin through the resurrection = If you’re a Christian here today, the only reason we are in bondage to sin is by yielding ourselves to sin
God set you free
you don’t have to sin
We choose
What you yield yourself a servant to that will be your master
It’s a wonderful life to be a servant to Jesus!
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
God freed you from death - The moment a born again believer takes his/her final breath on this earth, God quickens and takes that child to heaven
God frees you from sin, death, and the grave
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
We don’t die as Christians - the last breath here will be
Death has no more dominion over us
The Devil is a Conquered
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
We do not have to be under satan’s dominion
We do not have to be under sin’s domain
5. The Resurrection Provides For Us Glorified Bodies
Philippians 3:21 (KJV 1900)
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
vile = depression (in rank or feeling): - humiliation, be made low, low estate, vile.
God promises a new body
no:
cancer
death
sorrow
pain
1 Corinthians 15:55–58 (KJV 1900)
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Victory over sin, death, the devil
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
I remember when I was saved
You should have a experience
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Religion, good deeds - all of it doesn't matter unless you have come to Jesus
There is none good
But God commendeth his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died
Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved
John 11:26 (KJV 1900)
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
Call on Him
I want you to be there
But you cant reject Jesus and be there in heaven
