John 4:19–24 (KJV 1900)
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
God Has a Heart for Worship
The Father seeketh such to worship Him
9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
Worship in spirit and truth
There can be false religions that think they are worshipping God
1. True Worship Cannot Be Where The Spirit Does Not Abide
Daniel prayed toward the place, the building where worship took place
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, My flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2 To see thy power and thy glory, So as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
David was in a wilderness and was missing his worship time - there was a certain place
Tabernacle & Temple
Outer, inner, Holy of holies
God manifested His presence in the holy of holies
A dwelling and settling of the presence of God
34 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
Jesus Died, rose again and God changed the conditions in which worship would take place
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
When Jesus died God rent the veil so that something miraculous could happen
God would allow worship to be done - you and I can become the temple of God
You and I - Body, soul, spirit - holy of holies
God abides in you - in your spirit
Wherever God abides, that’s where worship takes place
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
You are the living temples of God - God abides in you
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Do we know that? I am the temple of God
God is in you -
Jesus died and God rent the veil - God made you royal - He made you a priest
If there is not true worship going on, a defiling of God’s temple, God will take care of that
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
One of the greatest things we can to is daily worship God
The temple is never closed - there is an ongoing worship that takes place
You going to church
David payed singers to worship all the time
Worship is not something we add to our life - it is naturally happening through the Spirit that lives in us
Do you Worship the Lord in your home
We are not to be alienated
Not forsaking the assembling - Worship happens everywhere the Spirit is Dwelling
This week as I was working, I had some great spiritual music playing
every day
This is one of the daily reward of the child of God
There should be worship happening In our Homes
Psa 63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
Psa 119:148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
Our home should be a center for Worship
The foundation of the Home is the Scripture
Living room
Kitchen
Worshipping God
Are we ever overwhelmed with the goodness of God
We are called to be the temple
Worship isn’t just something we do, we are the temple of worship
When God moves in, worship takes place
Worship = To feel in our heart and express in an appropriate manner, a delightful and humbling sense of admiration, awe, astonishment, and wonder and overpowering love in the presence of the Most High God.
People that worship live different lives
Marriage
lifestyle
countenance are all different
Worship happens when we return to our first love
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
bitterness, crude, rude
tense in the home
That displays a lack of worship
6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
Written in stone - the law
Moses was so consumed by the presence of God - the closeness - the glory was on moses’ face
Can you imagine experiencing seeing the face of Moses - You can and it’s greater
You are the temple - is there worship going on
When you go out into the world do people see you and say they have been with God
This changes your life
This changes how you treat your spouse
You can’t spend time worshipping the Lord and then go and scream in condemnation to another person
Our service - singing, preaching, serving - all that we do is supposed to be a worship of God happening from inside us
7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
Fixed - solidly fixed on God, established - at attention, stop what you are doing, fix your eyes on the object of your attention
8 Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
We Stop everything and focus on God
Worship in spirit and in truth
Spirit only = is out of balance feeling and emotion
Truth only = just a dead religious service
Only Spirit = More like a worldly rock Concert
Truth only = More like a funeral
Worship in spirit and truth
Theologically you can be
Both are offensive to God
You are supposed to be already worshipping God before you come into this service and your worship that has been taking place is supposed to overflow into this service
2. True Worship Cannot Come From A Heart Holding Evil
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
Psalm 19:14 (KJV 1900)
14 Let the words of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
