Prophet, Priest & King 3

Jesus Is Our True And Better King:
A Biblical Response To The Resurrection
Acts 3:17-21
Acts 3:14–16 NASB95
14 “But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. 16 “And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.
Acts 3:17–21 NASB95
17 “And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. 18 “But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, 21 whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.

1. As the Holy King, Jesus holds all sin accountable in His Kingdom. (17-18)

17“And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. 18But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
Acts 3:17-18
Main Idea: People are held accountable for all sin. Ignorance isn’t justification for sin. [Ignorance does not equal innocence.]
Main Idea: Jesus suffered for the payment of sin. We can’t minimize what Jesus laid down His life for.
“The greatest sin today in the church is the man in the pew who is ignorant of the Bible.”
-J. Vernon McGee
Knowledge never guarantees godliness, but ignorance always guarantees ungodliness.
In other words, how can we obey God if we are ignorant of how His Word defines obedience?
We can’t be ignorant of the Word and claim to “know” Jesus personally. This is a CONTRADICTION that minimizes the CRUCIFIXION!
Jesus wasn’t nailed to a piece of wood so that we would be ignorant of His Word.
“Ignorance of the Scripture is the root of all error, and makes a man helpless in the hands of the Devil.” -J.C. Ryle
James 2:10 NASB95
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Isaiah 64:6 NASB95
6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
Hebrews 4:13 NASB95
13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

2. As the RighteousKing, Jesus requires repentance for citizenship into His Kingdom. (19)

Acts 3:19 NASB95
19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
Main Idea: To be part of Jesus’ Kingdom/His family, we must repent and return to Him.
Genuine repentance is a gift from God not a good example of your guilt. Many see their sinful habits as sicknesses that need therapy, not rebellion that requires repentance.
“We are so sinful that even our tears of repentance must be washed in the blood of the Lamb.” -Jerry Bridges
“If your repentance has not changed your life, then you need to repent of your repentance!” -Steve Lawson
Illustration: Have you ever taken a long trip and traveled the same route there and back?
Most of the time, it seems like the trip home is shorter than the trip to the destination.
In actuality, it doesn’t take less time, but it just seems that way. Why is that? There is something about traveling home.
No matter how far a person has traveled away from God, if they are willing to make the return trip by REPENTANCE, God will make the time coming back a lot shorter than the time moving away from Him. The trip BACK home is always shorter if it’s by REPENTANCE!
Acts 17:30–31 NASB95
30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

3. As the Glorious King, Jesus will restore all aspects of His Kingdom. (20-21)

Acts 3:20–21 NASB95
20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, 21 whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.
Main Idea: Jesus will not allow His Kingdom to be overrun with sin and destruction. He will restore all aspects of His Kingdom, in His time.
Illustration: Many basketball fans think Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time. One reason this is true, is that he played just as hard in the regular season as he did in the playoffs.
Many basketball players today will take several games off to rest themselves for the postseason.
Jordan was once asked about his work ethic and not taking a day off. His reply was, “I have my eye on the playoffs.”
We need Believers who have their eyes set on Eternity…who faithfully work in the regular season while looking forward to postseason glory and true RESTORATION!
Romans 8:20–23 NASB95
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
Philippians 3:20–21 NASB95
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
