Have you ever explored historic American Monuments?
Valley Forge?
Gettysburg?
Fort Ticonderoga?
Fort William Henry?
Our very own “Saratoga Battlefield?
Last year, our family took a trip over to visit the tallest building in Vermont. It’s in Bennington and it is the Bennington Monument, a commemoration of the Revolutionary war battles from hundreds of years ago.
Saul sets up a monument even after knowing that the Lord was going to replace him.
1 Samuel 13:14 KJV 1900
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
We also have Samuel’s Robe torn!
Samuel’s robe is torn when Saul grabs it. The Lord uses this as an illustration of Saul’s Kingdom being torn away from him - all because of his disobedience.
1 Sam 15
God “repents” of having made Saul King. 11, 35.

15:11 I regret. Not an indication of changeableness in God’s nature (15:29; cf. James 1:17), but an expression of sorrow (cf. Gen. 6:6) at the sinful rebellion of Saul.

James 1:17 KJV 1900
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Malachi 3:6 KJV 1900
For I am the Lord, I change not; Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
Genesis 6:6 KJV 1900
And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Disobedience grieves God, it make Him Sad.
What is Obedience?
“compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority:” -Websters
Shema / Shama = to hear with a response.
This is why it is so important to study and know the Scriptures to establish communication with God, so we can hear, understand, and obey Him.
Draper's Book of Quotations for the Christian World (Obedience)
All heaven is waiting to help those who will discover the will of God and do it.
-J. Robert Ashcroft (1878–1958)
All my requests are lost in one, “Father, thy will be done!”
-Charles Wesley (1707–1788)
Faith and obedience are bound up in the same bundle. He that obeys God, trusts God; and he that trusts God, obeys God.
-Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892)
It’s good to teach our kids:
Obey swiftly, sweetly, and completely.
Partial Obedience is Complete Disobedience.
Delayed Obedience is Disobedience.

God Delights in Our Obedience. It Makes Happy.

3 examples of how we can Delight the Lord.

God is Delighted with Obedience, Not Sacrifices. 22

Hearing and Hearkening.
Listening and Acting.
If for one whole day, quietly and determinedly, we were to give ourselves up to the ownership of Jesus and to obeying his orders, we should be amazed at its close to realize all he had packed into that one day.
-Oswald Chambers (1874–1917)

God is Delighted in His Word Being Accepted. 23

Rebellion is like Witchcraft.
Stubbornness is Sin and Idol worship.
Disobedience is Rejecting God’s Word.
IE. Make sure that you are obeying the CLEAR Teachings of the Bible. Many people know more Christian preferences than they know of Christ’s clear commands. Set the “pious preferences” aside and focus on obeying the Truth.

Obedience to revealed truth guarantees guidance in matters unrevealed.

God is Delighted when We Demonstrate Love. 24-31

Saul was concerned about appearing to still have Samuel’s support.
He wants to turn around and worship, as if nothing happened.
Saul was living “self willed” instead of living out God’s will.
Saul was demonstrating more “self love than God love.” One of the problems of our humanity is our sin nature and the moments we choose to worship ourselves.
Saul “fears” the people more than he “fears” God. v.24. We call this “Peer pressure. We are more prone to sin when we are more concerned about people liking us more than how we are proving our love to God.
PARDON = “נָסָה nasah (669d); a prim. root; to lift, carry, take:” Robert L. Thomas, New American Standard Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionaries : Updated Edition (Anaheim: Foundation Publications, Inc., 1998).
Saul actually is asking Samuel to carry his sin to God on his behalf. (Sam was prophet and priest)
When we sin, we can confess directly to the Lord.
It’s hard to say if verse 25 is a genuine repentance on the part of Saul. If it is, in some ways, he is still “riding on the faith of Samuel.” When you read verse 30, it appears it is all for show.
Sometimes people come to church to make a show; to “show off.” They want to appear spiritual. Some focus on externals that make them look good.
It would be better to be REAL, HONEST, and UPFRONT. Don’t Just Fake “Everything is OK.”
The church is a car repair shop, not a car showcase place. We don't gather to show off our “Easter Sunday Best.”
We gather to truly worship God, honor Him, praise Him, learn from Him, and become more like Him.
WE don’t “Fake it till we make it!” We really want to demonstrate our love to and for God. That is one thing that is wonderful about our Scatter Groups is the mutual encouragement and accountability found in Bible study and developing relationships.
What did Jesus say about obedience?
John 14:15 KJV 1900
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
If God were to remove from us the possibility of disobedience there would be no value in our obedience, it would be a mechanical business.
-Oswald Chambers (1874–1917)
God want’s us to Love Him! That is the greatest commandment.
Mark 12:30 KJV 1900
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
