Have you ever been to a wedding?

At the beginning of the service, when the Pastor invites everyone to rise as the bride makes her entrance into the room. Where do you look? Its the big moment, right? the big reveal. The bridesmaids, the groomsman, everyone is in their place. The flower girls have placed their adorable pedals on the ground. The swell of music, Where are your eyes? The beautiful woman, dressed in white coming into the back of sanctuary with her father’s arm? At the first sight of the bride, my eyes shift to the groom, because its in his eyes that the deepest meaning of the moment are realized. In that singularly pivotal moment. Nothing else in the world exists except the deepest affection and love as he waits for that moment to take her hand (he’s done it a million times before, through dating, courting, and engagement. But this time its different.) Now what she means to him is clear.
Easter is the big moment. The stone is rolled away and at last is the glorious revelation of true love. But, to truly experience the magnitude and depth of this moment, I want to look instead at Peter.

Peter’s Story a Survey

Peter declares Jesus the Christ, Luke 9:20

He’s been with Jesus since his early days in Capernaum.

False Promises Luke 22:33

Luke 22:33 ESV
Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
Luke 22:60–62 ESV
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Luke 24:10–12 ESV
Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

Jesus knew Peter would deny him.

Luke 22:31–34 ESV
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
