Introduction:
Illustration: There is nothing quite like unexpected good news
Telling the story of Another Resurrection: Isaac. Hebrews 11:11-12.
Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
The NT Reflection upon the Story of Abraham/Isaac. Hebrews 11:19.
Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Our need is not purely to know this resurrection of Isaac but to see how this resurrection points us to the experience of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection.
What is the goal of the sermon?
To call all hearers to experience the power of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ by true faith.
Is there a need for this goal message?
For the discouraged Christian.
For the declared Christian.
For the disillusioned person.
Transition
How will you accomplish this goal?
By clarifying what death is, what resurrection means, and how we know we have resurrection life now.
Big idea:
Have you truly experienced the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ?
Body:
(1) What death is… - Hebrews 11:19
(1) What death is… - Hebrews 11:19
Death is separation. Hebrews 11:19.
Where did death as separation begin? In Genesis 3:22.
And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Death is separation from the Source of Life, who is God.
App:
We understand death as separation in more than one way!
Illustration: Death is Separation!
The worst thing about separation — separation from the Father.
Illustration: “A parent should never have to bury their child…etc” [Abraham is the tool for this death…]
Born into separation from the grieved Father - Romans 6:23.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Question
Death is present separation that results in eternal separation from the Father. Revelation 20:14.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Illustration: "You made your bed, you can lay in it.”
Transition: So, in the story of Abraham and Isaac, if we don’t understand that death is a separation, then we will have a hard time understanding how Abraham could receive Isaac back.
(2) What Resurrection Means… - Hebrews 11:19.
(2) What Resurrection Means… - Hebrews 11:19.
Resurrection means two things:
Resurrection means a reversal of separation. Hebrews 11:19.
Resurrection means a reception with the Father. Hebrews 11:19.
How can Resurrection mean a reversal of something that never happened?
Resurrection can mean reversal because of Abraham offered. Hebrews 11:17.
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
This verb shows us that Abraham’s faith and obedience were so real that God saw the sacrifice as being completed, though it was never done.
John Owen - “He did it in his will, heart, and affections though it was never carried out.” (p. 227)
Illustration: Helpful for understanding: The Prodigal Father’s words in Luke 15:32.
32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
Same sense with Abraham and Isaac...
App:
Our present condition is the same - Ephesians 2:1-3.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Illustration: You see, in the heart of Abraham, Isaac was dead. If Isaac is dead, then there is room to speak about a reversal.
Transition: Resurrection means a reversal of separation, and it also means a reception.
The relationship is restored. There is no longer separation.
To reverse death is to reverse the separation between two people; but to receive is to consider a relationship restored.
Illustration: The Prodigal’s Plan to be a Servant
Transition: In the story of Abraham, we learn that resurrection is a reversal & a reception.
App:
Our deepest need & want.
To the disillusioned. You think you need to cheat death but, concern yourself with whats on the other side of death.
To the disillusioned. You think you want death, but is it possible that death is not really a portal to peace but actually to a greater pain?
Transition: If death is a separation, and resurrection is a reversal of separation and a reception, how do I know that I have that kind of resurrection life?
(3) How we know we have resurrection life now - Hebrews 11:19.
(3) How we know we have resurrection life now - Hebrews 11:19.
The Resurrection of Isaac is a Parable. Hebrews 11:19. figure.
The Resurrection of Isaac points us to a Greater Father/Son.
The Resurrection of Jesus’ reveals an incomparable power.
Illustration: Nuclear threats of Russia.
Kill Jesus. He rises...
The Resurrection power of Jesus is made available to Christians. Philippians 3:10.
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
But how do we know if we have this resurrection life now?
You must have Christ now.
Having Christ now means a reversal of separation. Ephesians 2:13.
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Having Christ now means you are received. Romans 15:7.
7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.
App:
To the those who feel unworthy, Jesus was treated as unworthy...
To the scarred, Jesus received scars...
To the burdened, Jesus bore the burden of a cross...
To the lonely, Jesus was forsaken...
Forgiveness of sin and new life is found in Jesus Christ alone.
To the asking…How can I be received?
You must receive the Son.
To the asking…How can I experience this reversal?
You must reverse from self-faith to the Son-faith.
How?
By the same way that Abraham considered Isaac as dead - by a faith that was fully convinced about a Person.
Will you be convinced today and believe in the Person of Jesus Christ?
To the discouraged:
If indeed you have received Jesus and you do have this Resurrection life, how can you be sure that you have this resurrection life now?
There are three aspects of the resurrection life.
Your past resurrection is when you received Jesus. Ephesians 2:6.
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Your present resurrection is the kind of walk that you have now as a Christian. Romans 6:4.
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Your future resurrection is after you finally and physically die. I Corinthians 15:52.
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
Is my past resurrection experience true?
Do I really have a resurrection to look forward to?
The Message of all Hebrews 11.
True faith = The Rhythmic Life
Rhythm of death
Rhythm of resurrection
Ill: Abraham & Isaac.
Something in Abraham had to die in order for him to obey. His own will had to be set aside for the will of God.Death to his will had to happen so that resurrection would happen.
App:
True faith is the life that is patterned with daily death and daily resurrection.
True faith is the life that believes I can say “death to my own will” because I am promised “life to do the will of the Father”
True faith knows that my daily dying and resurrection is inextricably connected with the eternal, undying Christ.
The only kind of faith that endures is the faith that faithfully follows.
The Resurrection Life in the Christian Today. Luke 9:23.
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
The Resurrection Life is the Crucified Life. Galatians 2:20.
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Resurrection life is the persecuted life.
“…The imprint left in our lives by Christ’s resurrection power is, in a word, the Cross.” [Gaffin Jr., Richard B. in Redemption and Resurrection: An Exercise in Biblical-Systematic Theology] II Corinthians 4:10.
10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
The Resurrection Life is the Cross-Life — This is the Pattern
“The choice Paul places before the church for all time, until Jesus comes, is not for a theology of the Cross instead of a theology of resurrection-glory, but for his resurrection-theology as theology of the Cross.” [Ibid]
Application to those who are tired of fighting sin, fighting for the integrity of marriage, running from problems...
Encouragement
The Resurrection Life is the Life of Faith (in what?)
The Jesus Who endured Separation for Your Resurrection and Reception.
Application: Have you been rejected by your online community? By your employment community? By your educational community?
The Resurrection Life is the Received Life.
You are presently received in Jesus. The Father presently delights in your as a Son. I John 3:1.
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
The Resurrection Life is the Expectant Life
The Ultimate Reversal & Reception is Still Ahead. Revelation 21:3-4.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Conclusion:
So are you experiencing this resurrection life in Jesus Christ?
So, there are three kinds of people here this morning.
The Discouraged Christian. Those who are discouraged by the hardships of life. Will you believe that the Resurrection Theology is the Cross Theology — that the mark of resurrection life is the cross life? that you have a cross now but you have a Christ who has gone before you, is with you, and will ultimately welcome you home?
[_] Today, I have believed that Resurrection Theology is Cross Theology. By the Holy Spirit’s help, I will continue to deny myself, take up my Cross, and follow Jesus — believing fully that my life is to be a pattern of death and resurrection until the day I meet Jesus.
The Declared Christian. You have professed that you know Jesus; but after hearing this message (no pattern of death/resurrection), you now do believe in Jesus. Do not be ashamed to declare openly that Jesus is your Lord.
[_] Today, I have truly believed on Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and accept the full reversal and reception that Jesus has made possible. I am not ashamed to confess Jesus as my Lord.
To the Disillusioned Person. Those who accept the reality of death, but are trying to make a living out of cheating death (other spectrum - you see death as the answer). Would you pause for a moment and see the payment for sin is separation from God forever; and that forgiveness of sin is offered to you in Jesus — who conquered death? Will you give your life to Jesus today?
[_] Today, I am turning from trusting upon myself, and I am accepting full forgiveness for all my sin by believing in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. In so doing, I am accepting the full reversal and reception that Jesus alone has made possible.
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ has made a great reversal and reception possible.
