UW: Reasons
Intro.: [AGS]: There’s a story about two men. One man was named Nathan and the other named David. David had done a terrible thing, and he was running from the reality of it. Nathan confronted David, but he did so with a story or parable. There were men, one rich and one poor. The rich man obviously had a lot while the poor man had only enough to survive. A traveler came to town and approached the rich man. However, being greedy, instead of giving up some of his belonging to welcome the guest, he went and took from the poor man to accommodate the guest. Obviously, this was wrong. Immediately, David sensed it, and he quickly said, “That man deserves to die.” Then… the truth was exposed. Nathan said, “You are the man!” (2 Sam. 12:1-7) [RS(a)]: We are often like David. We like to judge others and determine what should happen to them all the while refusing to take responsibility for our position in life, our reality in life, and our destiny in life. We like to point a finger at others, but we do not like to point at ourselves. Today, I am preaching to you. This passage is for you. This message is for you. This good news is for you. [TS]: The passage today recalls the resurrection of our LORD, Jesus Christ. Jesus rose from the dead! [RS(b)]: The question is simply this: Why should the resurrection matter to me?
TS: Let us examine together the reasons the resurrection matters to you:
The resurrection offers life after death. (vv. 5b-8)
Jesus rose. He is alive. He is active.
Jesus’ resurrection offers to all who will accept it eternal life. (Jn. 3:16; Jn. 11:25-26)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man. 22 For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
APPLICATION: Through the resurrection, we are offered eternal life, life after death. What will you do about it? Rom. 3:23 states that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The all includes you. The resurrection matters for you because through it you are offered eternal life.
The resurrection offers a powerful message for all to share. (vv. 9-12)
Interestingly enough, the first to hear the news and witness the empty tomb were women. Culturally, women were some of the lowest class, least valuable people. Yet, they were the first witnesses.
No matter what you have done; no matter who you are; no matter how people view you- God wants to use you. God uses those that the world says is nothing to do something to show the world that what it thinks is nothing is truly something.
Notice what the women did when they witnessed the empty tomb and heard the good news: they reported all these things! (v. 9) They realized the significance of the moment and message.
APPLICATION: The resurrection offers a powerful message that the world needs today. For those of us who have experienced the resurrection power, we need to share it with others. We need to report it, to herald it, to proclaim it! The resurrection matters for you because it compels you to tell someone.
CONCLUSION:
(1) Each of us have to understand that the resurrection matters to me. Yes, it matters for those sitting to the left and to the right of you, but you must realize that it matters for YOU.
(2) Have you truly embraced the resurrection in your life? Have you truly let it matter for your life?
(3) Today, I want you to respond by letting the resurrection matter to you through making the resurrected King your Lord. I want you to then commit to declaring this message of good news to the world! What hinders you?
