This story takes place in Dutch New Guinea (Irian Jaya now- part of Indonesia)
The planted pineapples - sandy soil, it was the only thing that would grow
These people were the greatest thieves in the world.
God sent Otto among those people the teach him the lesson of Luke 14:33...
33 In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.
c. They called him the “Long nosed white man; The long nosed missionary” (stingy!)
d. They would steal everything...
He would go around with a box and collect all the things that they would call him “The Missionary with the box.”
They called him the angry white man, “He said he wasn’t angry until I met you!”
He closed the clinic for stealing...
They let their babies die.
They reopened the clinic...
The garden needed weed and the tribesman said your garden needs weeded...
Otto said, your eating the fruit, weed it yourself...
They closed the trade store because of the stealing...
The tribe got angry and said if the missionary wont share there is no use live near them...
They moved away to their favorite hunting grounds...
This caused Otto to get all his reports done (people thoughts he was a good missionary even though he had no people).
The plane comes again and the airstrip was not cut because the tribe was gone...
The pilot says, get your people back...
Otto prayed to God for a messenger.
God provided a messenger to go to the people, and they came back...
They started stealing the pineapples again...
This made Otto made...
The people called him the Angry White Man...
Otto then got a german shepherd...
The people were afraid of the dog...
The dog ruined the ministry, Otto had pineapples but had no people again…they were afraid of the dog...
The people wouldn’t come around...
Otto could not learn the language!
Otto could not learn the culture!
Otto tried everything to get them to stop stealing...
He divided the garden in half (you can have that half and this is my half)
The stole his half anyway!
They tried to sell Otto the stolen pineapples…
Otto was camping on the verse 1 John 1:9 because of his anger...
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
a. Forgive 70x7, Otto calculated that was about a year and a half...
8. Otto found out it was the natives that he paid to plant were the ones stealing the pineapples...
a. The chief said that if you plant them, you eat them...
i. You didn’t get your hand dirty…why were you getting mad about something you didn’t own?
1. Do you ever do that?
b. Otto gave them the pineapple plants…
i. He paid them to remove the plants...
1. Otto started a new garden...
a. He paid the natives to plant them with machetes so they would be his!
b. He went on furlough and swore that he would never go back, and his wife said the same thing...
c. He went to a missionary conference and Bill preached on rights (it was a long night!)
