INTRODUCTION
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
TODAY’S MESSAGE
BENEFITS OF GOSPEL FREEDOM: FREED TO LIVE FOR CHRIST
INTRODUCTION
in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Flesh and Spirit: Two completely different worlds
· POINT:
WHEN ONE CLAIMS TO BE CHRISTIAN THEY ARE CLAIMING TO BE ONE WITH CHRIST: LIVING WHERE CHRIST REIGNS AND, THEREFORE, NOT LIVING WHERE SIN REIGNS
WHEN ONE CLAIMS TO BE CHRISTIAN THEY ARE CLAIMING TO BE ONE WITH CHRIST: LIVING WHERE CHRIST REIGNS AND, THEREFORE, NOT LIVING WHERE SIN REIGNS
· LET THIS POINT SETTLE IN YOUR HEARTS:
THE RESURRECTION IS NOT MERELY AS DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE MYSELF; IT IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SELF
THE RESURRECTION IS NOT MERELY AS DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE MYSELF; IT IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SELF
PAUL CALLS US TO EVALUATE THIS: 9-11
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Verse 5
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
- Makes the connection between: set their minds…live
TWO MENTALITIES
A. A WASTED MIND LEADS TO A WASTED LIFE
A. A WASTED MIND LEADS TO A WASTED LIFE
A wasted mind is a mind that is given over to the flesh: etc
EPHE 4:17-19--
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
PAUL ELABORATES ON WHAT THIS LIFE LOOKS LIKE
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
B. A WORSHIPFUL MIND CULTIVATES A WORSHIPFUL LIFE
B. A WORSHIPFUL MIND CULTIVATES A WORSHIPFUL LIFE
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
To set your mind on the things of the Spirit does not mean
1. that you go around with your head in the clouds, detached from everyday matters.
2. that you must join a monastery and spend hours every day in meditation and prayer.
3. that you do not get your hands dirty with mundane things like work, paying bills, cleaning the house, fixing meals, mowing your lawn, or reading the newspaper.
Rather, to set your mind on the things of the Spirit means to relate all of life to God and His Word.
COL 3:1-4---
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
IN COL 3 = SET MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE
HERE IN ROMANS 8: SET MIND ON THINGS OF SPIRIT
TO SET MY MIND ON THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT MEANS TO LIVE WITH A CONSCIOUS DESIRE TO REFLECT GOD BY FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
TO SET MY MIND ON THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT MEANS TO LIVE WITH A CONSCIOUS DESIRE TO REFLECT GOD BY FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
