New Wineskins for the New Wine

Intro

Text - Luke 5.36-39

Luke 5:36–39 NKJV

36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”

The Parable

old and new cloths

a new cloth cannot be stitched on an old cloth - it will tear the old cloth as it shrinks

the new wine cannot be placed in an old wineskin

the old wineskin is dry, while the new wineskin is stretchble and flexible as it is fresh

the new wine is undergoing fermentation, and requires a wineskin that can withstand the build up of carbon and oxygen inside. ]

an old wineskin will burst when filled with new wine due to the fermentation

First application - old and new testaments (covenants)

Jesus was introducing a “new wine” to the Jews

the New Covenant

Luke 22:19–20 NKJV

19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

John 1:17 NKJV

17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The New is not compatible with the Old Covenant

the Law kills, the New gives life

2 Corinthians 3:5–6 NKJV

5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

The New Covenant is a better covenant

It is established on better promises

Hebrews 8:6 NKJV

6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

the words of God are written in the heart

Hebrews 8:7–13 NKJV

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

it provides redemption for those condemned by the Old Covenant

Hebrews 9:15 NKJV

15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The New Covenant needs new wineskins

the “old heart” is deceived, stubborn and disobedient, and defiled by sin

Ezekiel 36:26–28 NKJV

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

it takes a “new heart” to be able to receive the new wine

Second application - new mind to receive the things of God

Ephesians 4:17–24 NKJV

17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

The old life (walk) is governed by the old mind (darkened understanding

walk of the Gentiles

old mind - darkened, alienated, ignorant, blinded

The new life begins with putting off the old man (nature, life)

repentance and renouncement

The new life is the new man, which begins with a renewed mind

renewed - fresh, to become yough again

The old mind cannot receive the things of God

1 Corinthians 3:1 NKJV

1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.

carnal - Christians who behavbe like the unbelievers

carnal Christian - because carnal thinking

the Corinthian church was not ready to receive the things of God

1 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV

14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:7–16 NKJV

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Conclusion

If you want to receive the things of God, which only the Spirit can give and reveal, be a new wineskin - be a new man

get your mind renewed

make it teachable

make it sensitive to the voice of the spirit

make it obedient to Christ

2 Corinthians 10:3–6 NKJV

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
