Palm Sunday Sermon
8. THREE MEN AND THREE CROSSES (Luke 23:32–43) Notice three important phases of the death of Christ. (1) Importance of His death—Hebrews 9:22. He had to die. He had to fulfil the words of Isaiah 53 and the other Prophets. (2) Influence of His death—1 John 1:7. Through His blood, we have forgiveness of all sin! (3) Indifference toward His death—Matthew 27:36. Note that they just sat and watched Him die. Where were the people He had healed? Those He helped? I. SARCASM—Cross of doubt “If Thou be the king of the Jews save thyself”—Luke 23:37 1. Doubt. Notice “If!” This thief had doubt whether as the king of Jews! The Bible tells us that it is necessary to have faith to please God—Hebrews 11:6. Also we not only must believe in our head, but also in our hearts—Romans 10:9, 10. 2. Degradation. This thief was dying for his sin! Christ was dying for man’s sin! By Christ’s death on the cross, we need not pay for sins—Romans 6:23b—note, “… the gift of God is eternal life.” 3. Damnation. This thief did not believe Christ, so he was lost. Note the words of Jesus in Mark 16:16. Jesus also said that unless man is born again, he cannot see God!—John 3:1–8. II. SINCERE—Cross of faith “And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom”—Luke 23:42. 1. Respect. Notice that He called Jesus “Lord.” He believed He was the Son of God. Here is the first step in coming to God—respecting Christ as the Son of God! Also note, “… Anyone who wants to come to God must believe that there is a God and that He rewards those who sincerely look for Him.”—Hebrews 11:6, Living New Testament. 2. Repentance. “But the other criminal protested, ‘Don’t you even fear God when you are dying? We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man hasn’t done one thing wrong.”—Luke 23:40–41, Living New Testament. He saw his need and was sorry. We, too, must be willing to repent. 3. Reception. This thief accepted Christ on the cross. Jesus makes all who accept Him, His children—John 1:12. III. SAVIOUR—Cross of pardon “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise”—Luke 23:43. 1. The promise of heaven—John 14:1–3. Here are the words of Jesus, who is preparing heaven for us. Also note John 3:16; 5:24. There is life and hope beyond death. 2. The plan of heaven—John 14:6. One way—through Christ. It is not good works or deeds—Ephesians 2:8–9. 3. The people of heaven—2 Corinthians 5:17; Hebrews 12:14. 4. The peace of heaven—Revelation 21:4; 20:1–3. Are you ready for heaven? Have you purchased your ticket? Christ bore the cross for you and me. He took our hell upon the cross. Now by accepting Him, we need not go to hell. He went all the way to the cross! His back ached from the whipping; His head ached from the crown of thorns; His heart ached from being deserted by His friends and Disciples. Now He asks that we take up our cross daily to follow Him—Luke 9:23 Croft M. Pentz, Evangelistic Sermon Outlines, Dollar Sermon Library Series (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1970), 18–19.
