The Message

The message is much more important than the messenger. The messenger is needed to deliver the message. But now may we start to turn to the message about God’s righteousness.
Romans 1:2–3 NASB95
2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,
Romans 1:4–5 NASB95
4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake,
Romans 1:6–7 NASB95
6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gleaning from the scripture
What do you see in this section, make some quick notes.
How did God make the promises according to (v.2)?
Through His prophets in the holy scriptures
What was the proof offered of the declaration found in (vv.3-4)?
The declaration is Jesus is the Son of God who came with power
The proof was the resurrection from the dead!
What is the results of the declaration (v.5-6)?
We receive grace
We are called then to be obedient to the faith
Let me expound on this some in short order
This starts with a promise- the gospel, the fulfillment in Christ and the church (v.2) the fulfillment of the prophesy and the the covenant
Luke 24:44–46 NASB95
44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
You may note down 1Pt1:10-12 for your notes too 1Pt1:10-12 “10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.”
The personification in Christ became the person of Christ who came as the exact representation of God in the flesh for
Jesus was a human and came in the flesh (v.3)
He was deity for He was born of a virgin, and was raised from the dead (v.4)
Paul knew that his power, his authority was not of his own but through the resurrected Christ . It was the foundation of his apostleship and is, or should be the foundation of our message too!

Recipients and Reason

This should be in short order since I’m sure our time is short, but don’t let the time keep you from the depth and strength of the passage.
Romans 1:6–7 NASB95
6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The recipients
The called
This the called, the sanctified, those set apart, the rescued, the redeemed (note down 1Cor1:1-2; Col1:13-14)
The beloved
This is the beloved in Rome, whom are loved by the Lord (note down 2The2:13-14)
The saints
And that is what you are a saint, meaning you are holy not by your deeds, but by Gods work in you and through you.
The reason
That you may have peace from God and Jesus Christ.
(Summary to close)
You are called, you are beloved, you are holy, you are in receipt of God’s righteousness and what a great journey will have as we continue through the book of Romans. let these opening verses soak in. God’s righteousness is revealed through Jesus Christ and the church!

Righteousness/Holiness revealed

Consider what does righteousness mean? Does it work hand in hand with holiness? Does one impact the other? How do we get or have righteousness? Do we need holiness, righteousness?
(Insert Saved now what PowerPoint Here)
So, you have been saved, you have had your sins forgiven, now what? What changes except for your destination? EVERYTHING!
We want to change now that God has changed our destination eternally, but what does God want? What are we to do, how are we to do it? The book of Romans is all about that, what God has done to those who need it, it is the righteousness and holiness of God revealed.
There is a song by Donnie McClurkin I love to sing as a reminder. I will try to give you some words and not sing, if I can.
Holiness, holiness is what I long for
Holiness is what I need
Holiness, holiness is what You want from me.
Righteousness, righteousness is what I long for
Righteousness, is what I need
Righteousness, righteousness is what You want for me.
So, when you think of Righteousness, what do you, in simple terms believe it means?
How about holiness? what does that mean?
What Is Righteousness?
Righteousness is an attribute that belongs to God, the Lawgiver, and is manifested in His laws. No man can be justified by his own works apart from God’s ordinance. Therefore, righteousness is a wonderful gift from God to humanity through His love: it is the God-given quality imputed to man upon believing in the Son of God.
That is according to Philip Wijaya of Christianity today.com
God does not want us to be something that He has not equipped us to be, or given us the tools to do, or be transformed.
Righteousness is the quality of being right with God, and that happens when we are saved. Another word to add in here is justified!
Romans 5:1 NASB95
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Justified, being made right with God, having peace with God by the peace of God that is given to the believer when the person is born again.
God’s character and nature display His righteousness and holiness. God is also just and that is why we need God’s justification for our sins for God does expect our transformation and our holiness.
God has justified us and by doing such has called us to be holy and righteous, not of our own but by Him and through Him.
So, this morning here are our points
God’s expectation regarding righteousness
God’s righteousness is God’s gift to man
God’s righteousness revealed
God’s righteousness received through faith.

God’s expectation regarding righteousness

Do you think it is fair for God to have expectations of His children? Why do you think God has expectations of us? Let’s look at some of His expectations for a few minutes.
God calls us, expects us to be holy (1Pt1:15-16)
1 Peter 1:15–16 NASB95
15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Who called you (1Pt1:15-16)?
Called you to do what?
(insert instructions for Godly righteousness PowerPoint here)
God calls us to be perfecting Holiness (2Cor6:14-7:1)
Don’t be bound with unbelievers, we are to come out from their midst and be separated
Now, please look at (6:17-18) what are we told to do? What is the promise given?
How are we to do what is asked according to (7:1)?
God calls us to put on the new self, clothed in righteousness (Eph4:17-24)
This is a bible study, so turn to Eph4 with me please.
There are some instructions we find, things God calls us to do in this passage (vv17-24) lets look together
What instruction do you find (v.17)?
Why is the instruction given (vv.17-19)
More instructions (v.22) what are they?
Finally, (v.24) what instructions are given?
(Transition) We have some responsibility, but we have the capability to fulfill the responsibility because of the imparting given by God.

God’s righteousness is God’s gift to man

God’s greatest gift is love, is the Son. Followed by the Spirit to those who believe which imparts godly righteousness, not a righteousness of our own, but His!
Righteousness given, for righteousness needed (Rom3:10)
we have no righteousness of our own
Romans 3:10 NASB95
10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one;
Righteousness given needs to be righteousness confessed (Rom10:3-10)
The Jews had their own form of righteousness and refused to to subject themselves to righteousness of God (v.3-4)
The righteousness of God is available to all who believe (v.4)
A righteousness based on faith (v.6-8)
Should then be confessed
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
What brings the righteousness as noted in (v.10)? And what are the results?
Righteousness given only comes through the giver, Jesus (Gal2:21)
Galatians 2:21 NASB95
21 “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”
For you received that righteousness when you were saved by faith through grace (Eph2:8-9; Tit3:4-7)
For by grace you are saved by faith
By the washing and regeneration of the Holy Spirit
So, be wrapped in God’s righteousness (Isa61:10)
Isaiah 61:10 NASB95
10 I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
It was a present tense understanding to Isaiah; He knew the promise of being washed white as snow! It is a present tense for us today who believe! So, be wrapped in the robe of righteousness!
That song I mentioned earlier and gave the first verse of it, well the next verse is the same but it is about righteousness, we want it, God has it and wants us to have it. The chorus of the song says this:
So, take my heart and mold it
Take my mind, transform it
Take my will, conform it
To Your, To Yours, Oh Lord
(Transition) God’s gift of righteousness to man that saves man starts to change us to we desire what He desires.

God’s righteousness revealed

God’s righteousness has been revealed, and by its revelation there are many benefits.
Revealed historically through deliverance from bondage in Egypt.
Revealed through Jesus being handed over (Rom4:25)
Rom4:25 “25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.”
Revealed through the Gospel (Rom1:16-17)
Rom1:16-17 “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.””
Revealed so that grace may reign in righteousness (Rom5:17)
rom5:17 “17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
That righteousness may reign in Jesus Christ (Rom5:21)
rom5:21 “21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Righteousness revealed by redemption through Jesus Christ (Rom3:23-24)
Rom3:23-24 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;”
And it is free gift (Rom6:23)
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Transition) this revealed righteousness is made possible by God through Jesus by faith.

Righteousness of God through faith

The revealed available righteousness is through faith.
Our faith is objective, and the object is faith in Jesus Christ
Something to ponder, what does your faith look like, is your faith evident?
Our faith has a principle - it excludes boasting (Rom3:27-31; Rom4:45; Rom9:30-33)
Romans 3:27–28 NASB95
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
Romans 3:29–30 NASB95
29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.
Romans 3:31 NASB95
31 Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.
You cannot work yourself into righteousness
Romans 4:4–5 NASB95
4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
Righteousness is only by faith, not by works
Romans 9:30–31 NASB95
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.
Romans 9:32–33 NASB95
32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
Without the righteousness of God received through faith, we are lost and separated from God
One more passage to consider this morning and let’s look together, turn to Rom10.
Romans 10:1–2 NASB95
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.
Romans 10:3–4 NASB95
3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
What is Paul’s heart desire (v.1)?
What is the problem Paul identifies (vv.2-3)?
What is the requirement for righteousness (v.4)?
As we are going to continue to look at the righteousness of God through book of Romans so that we can be God’s righteousness to the world may we look in the mirror to start and be willing to acknowledge your own brokenness outside of Christ and evaluate your place in Christ and what you are going to do with it.
So, take my heart and mold it
Take my mind and transform it
Take my will and conform it
To Yours, to Yours, oh Lord.
