This Week’s Theme: Praise God for His Faithfulness
Memory Verse: Hebrews 10:23 “23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
This Week’s Word is Faithfulness of God: His perfect loyalty and consistency in being true to His name, His character, and His Word.
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: The psalmist celebrates God’s constant character while not seeing the evidence of it.
Sermon Objective: Christians ought to celebrate God’s constant character through Christ even when it is not evident.
Sermon Text: Psalm 89:1-2
INTRODUCTION: ABRAHAM FELT IT.
JOSEPH FELT IT.
MOSES FELT IT.
JOSHUA FELT IT.
DAVID FELT IT.
FELT WHAT?
YOU MAY BE ASKING YOURSELF THIS MORNING.
THE UNCOMFORTABLE PLACE WHEN YOUR LIFE DOESN’T ALIGN WITH WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED.
YOUR circumstances don’t align with your convictions
YOUR issues don’t align with your ideology
YOUR placement doesn’t align with your principles
Let me illustrate.
God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, but did not have a child.
God revealed to Joseph that his family and even those in authority would bow before him, but he found himself in prison.
David was anointed the next king over Israel, but he was on the run because Saul wanted to and tried to kill him.
In their lives and in my life I have felt that your standing or situation doesn’t align with what you heard about the Sovereign God.
TRANSITION: In the passage before us today Ethan, the writer of this psalm is stating the present situation of the nation of Israel and its king.
Look at verses 38-44
Psalm 89:38-44
Notice his present situation with the “You have”
Sermon Proposition:
Christians ought to celebrate God’s constant character through Christ even when it is not evident.
I. REVERENCE HIM
Psalm 89:7-14
HERE THE VERB IS REFLEXIVE, MEANING THE SUBJECT CAUSES THE ASSEMBLY OF THE SAINTS TO BE AFRAID AND THE SUBJECT CAUSES THE ACTION, IN THIS CASE DREAD OR BEING AFRAID, TO BE RECEIVED.
GOD RECEIVES FEAR FROM THE PEOPLE.
THE SAME IS TRUE ABOUT THE VERB “HELD IN REVERENCE” GOD CAUSES OTHERS TO STAND IN AWE OF HIM AND HE RECEIVES THEIR AWE.
HEAR THE PSALMIST WORDS OF WONDER IN VERSE 8.
verse 8 no one CAN COMPARE TO HIS mighty
He controls creation
He defeats enemies with His mighty arm
APPLICATION:
Are you guilty of not showing respect to the LORD?
If yes, write out your confession.
Describe how you will start reverencing God for His power in your home, on your job, and in the church.
II.
REMEMBER HIM
His Covenant
Psalm 89:20, 24, 28
Psalm 119:89; Numbers 23:19; Matthew 24:25
His Consequences
Psalm 89:30-32; Galatians 6:7-8
ILLUSTRATION:
APPLICATION:

Name the promises of God in Christ (list the Scripture references).
Have you violated God’s rules and are experiencing the consequences of your actions?
Seeing that no Christian is perfect, what is the Holy Spirit convicting you about today, and what steps will you take to return to God?
III.
REJOICE IN HIM
Psalm 89:14-18; 1-2
Rejoice in His mercies and make known His faithfulness
Yes, YOU may want to know how long like the Ethan did in verse 46.
BECAUSE Your dilemma may seem bigger than our Deliverer,
Your circumstance may seem bigger than our Christ
Your situation may seem bigger than our Savior.
Yes, YOU may want God to remember me and my frailty like Ethan did in verses 47-48
Yes, YOU may wonder where is the mercy and why the enemy is allowed to continue like in verses 49-50.
Yet, LIKE THE PSALMIST I have determined to sing of His mercies and make know God’s faithfulness.
I will remember that the LORD promised in verses 33-34 that
APPLICATION: I am resolved that . . .
Since Christians rejoice in the attributes of God, list some of Christ’s attributes (His essence), like all-knowing.
When your problems does not align with the promises of God, what will you do?
What verses will you highlight and seek to remember when your circumstances don’t align with your convictions?
Actions speak louder than words, name the Christians you will encourage who are experiencing a difficult period in their life with God’s Word.
